Real knife or Movie prop?
« on: September 20, 2005, 08:25:10 PM »
Anyone seen the movie Young Guns?  In the movie the character "Chavez" carried a bowie knife that had rings on guard or handle.  The rings allowed him to spin the knife on his finger.  Has anyone ever seen a knife like this before aside from the movie?  I don't know if there was a style of bowies that had this feature historically, but I can't find anything close on the internet.  I know you could probably make a knife like this, but I have no knife-making skills.  If you've seen or heard of such a thing.......let me know  .

Actually, the ring guard bowie was a popular style in california around the 1850's or so.  Michael Price, the great California knifemaker made that type of guard, and I imagine others did also.  The only major difference being that the California Bowie had a large spear point blade with a sharpened swedge.  Not to say that someone didn't also make that style guard on a clip point bowie; bowie's were made in every size, shape and form you could think of.
