the pistoleer,
you asked how the .480 ruger compares to the .460 s&w.
the .480 lists 1000 to 1700 ft-lbs energy, the .460 lists 2100 to 2800 ft-lbs energy.
velocity for 300gr bullets are 2167ft/sec on the .460 compared to 1525ft/sec on the .480.
these data are taken from ammoguide.com
put em where you want em

I guess I should should add my $.02 worth. I hunt deer with a S&W 629-4 Classic in .44 mag. topped with a Ultra red dot scope. Not this last year, had quadrupal by pass surgery in Oct. '05.  But, God willing, will again in 2006.

My currnet favorite is a 41 mag S&W PC light hunter under a Burris 4x.
I have a S&W 657 mountian gun (unscoped) for the closer shots, I often hunt with both guns at once.

Ruger 3 screw 44mag Super Blackhawk. It's a real beater of a revolver with 75% of the blueing left on it and a fantastic trigger. It is the best shooter of all of my pistols and kills hog and deer like Thor's hammer. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I plan on using my Smith 657 41 mag that I bought this year.  I am becoming intrigued with the 41 mag as a good all around outdoor handgun caliber, so we'll see how it goes.     Wyatte

I hunt deer with three different handguns depending upon the area I'm hunting.  I use a six inch heavy barrel Dan Wesson in .357 Magnum with open sights, a six inch Dan Wesson in .445 Supermag or a Thompson Center Contender fourteen inch  in .35 Remington topped with a Nikon 1 1/2 - 5 x scope.  I've taken more deer with the .357 Magnum as I've had it the longest.
Take care and keep you powder dry.  :D

If I read it right the original question was which r-e-v-o-l-v-e-r we hunt deer with.  I, too, like my Contenders.  And my first choice hunting deer is my Contender Super 14 .44 mag using either Speer 240 gr. softpoints or my own cast 240 gr.  My second choice is the 12 in. Custom Shop .30-30 bbl. using either Hornady 130 gr. SSP's or Nosler 150 gr. BT's.

But in revolvers, my choice is a 5 1/2 in. Ruger Blackhawk using either the Speer 240 gr. softpoint, my cast 240 gr., or Rainier Ballistic 240 gr. HP's.

Yes, some of you people are lucky enough to hunt all three. I guess the question is aimed at those of us who only have the whitetail as a native species? Maybe start a thread for the other species of deer and or including elk and moose? Didn't mean to affend or omit anyone. Just curious about the local game and guns used for it.

Liked the 454 until I shot the 460S&W in the 460XVR 8 3/8".  That's what I would be shooting with this fall.

I was going to shot one last year but my taxidermist wanted to much to mount it. Plus the wife said it would not fit over the fire place.  :-D

Sounds like it must have been a mature trophy.  Boone and Crocket maybe?  Could always do a European type mount of just the skull next time.
