I was going to shot one last year but my taxidermist wanted to much to mount it. Plus the wife said it would not fit over the fire place.  :-D

I have hunted with a 44Mag for 10 plus years with good results untill, I had one at 25yds and 6 shots later he did not fall. the shots were one the spot they just went threw to fast to do damage. Now I have seen the light
357MAX a flat shooting excelent range with knock down. My best shot with a bipod is 130yds down it went. a 250yd shot on a 5gal bucket is well with in reason repatedly. T/C super 14

Well, I think I counted 16 answers that didn't answer the original question (7.08 mm T/Cs and so on)? So, the poll is not going to be correct, by any means. I would erase the question, if I could, but can't. Still, for all practical purposes, the .44 mag. seem to be the hands down choise for most hunters?

Either a .475 Linebaugh, 440 gr. WFN at 1350 fps. ( 4 3/4" Freedom Arms), I know, way too much, or a .45 colt 320 grainer at a little under 1100.  ( 4" S&W mountain gun).  I haven't gotten anything bigger than a squirrel with either during deer season, so who knows which is better.  Maybe I should stop shooting at squirrels during deer season and see if that helps.

I have used a 375JDJ and a 44 Mag for 9+ years. The 375 has a 14" vent rib barrel and a 2.5x8 Leupold scope. The 44 Mag is a 8 3/8" Classic DX.  This year I will be using a 5 1/2" 500 Linebaugh by David Clements. I have about 5 weeks and 600 rounds done and am doing well. I can cover 4 of 5 shots with my hand at 100 yards and 100% at 50 yards.

It is very interesting that in the poll, "other" is slightly leading over the .44 mag (by a very slim margin).

I had expected the .44 mag to take a very strong lead with the advantages of having so many guns chambered for it and with factory ammo readily available.

Dan Wesson .357 Mag (most of the time)
Ruger Blackhawk .44 mag.
Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt.
S&W model 29 .44 Mag
Custom S&W model 1917 in .45 Auto Rim
I have found that the .357 mag. is more than adequate for Whitetail
They simply are not that hard to kill. I am going to use the 1917
a lot more simply because I shoot it better than the others. I use
200 grain SWC's and it has not let me down yet.
I do hunt very heavy cover and a long shot for my property would be about 60-70yards. If the distances are more, I am going to use a rifle anyway.

From "Other" to 44 magnum

Was out this last deer season with a 45Colt Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter model.  Alas, I sold off the Ruger to pay for a shotgun, so now I'll be heading out for the 2006 deer season with a 44magnum again.   I like the nostalgia of the 45 Colt cartridge, but did find bullet selection locally limited.  For me, the two calibers are a toss up since I'll reload for either.

I used to hunt with a TC Contender in .35 Rem.  It did well and I enjoyed it.  However I really prefer revolvers.  I sold it.  I hunt with a Ruger Blackhawk 7 1/2 bbl , 2x Simmons Scope, with a 452424 Keith over 19.5 grns of H-4227.  Not too powerful, but very, very accurate in my gun.  Besides, like ol' Elmer said...Once it goes through the critter, the rest of that energy is wasted on the sand bank that stops the bullet.  Too bad my S&W .45 Colt Mnt Gun doesn't like that load.

It really doesn't take much to punch through a deer or blackbear.

Recently (like, last month) however, I picked up a used Dan Wesson in .44 Mag with a 8 inch bbl.  That dang thing is so accurate it's spooky!  My favorite load is a RCBS 44-250kt over 10 grains of Unique.  Again, not super hot, but enough power to do anything that needs doin' in these parts.  Plus it is comfortable to shoot in my S&W .44 mag Mnt Gun.  But in that Dan Wesson, it makes one ragged hole at 50 yards (as far as I have shot it).  Just spooky accurate that Dan Wesson!  Might have to take the scope off my Ruger and use that as my  stalking gun and put the scope on the DW for the deer blind (the DW is as heavy as a tank, the Ruger is much nicer to walk/stalk with.
Thanks from the Frozen Northwoods!!!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” – John 3:16

That still amazes me…I don’t care who you are or how much I care about you, I would never let you kill my son.  I can’t even begin to understand how much He loves us.

Last year, 475 Linebaugh FA 83 with 420 grain hard cast at 1,000 fps.  This year 45 Colt FA 97 with 225 grain Barnes DPX loads.  Still working on a good cast load for this gun so I am using Cor-Bon factory loads untill I get a good reliable cast reload.

I also have`a 8" Dan Wesson 357 I might use here in northern Oklahoma, most deer are 150 lbs or less with a few 200-250 monsters around ( which I never get a shot at)

5.5' is an awfully long barrel on that .41, GradyL41.

M29 .44 Mag. 6" bbl., Tasco Pro Point Red Dot sight,  21.0 gr. 2400, 250 gr. RCBS cast.

T-C Contender 14" bbl. .30-30, 2x7 T-C scope.

Dan Wesson .357 6" w/ iron sights when it's raining since I can keep it dry until I need it.

Is that a recoil-reducing glove I see on your hand in the picture?
