Who makews the best 40 grain hollow point and the best 40 grain solid bullet?  Do the Wincherster bullets respectively solid and hollow point hit clost to the same point of impact? How about CCI?

People swear buy the Winchester super X,I get 2 inch groups from them.I like Winchester 34 grain suprems or the Remington 33 grain Vmax, they give me groups a little larger than an inch. The groups were shot at 100 yards.

The rifle is a Marlin982 S.  My plan for this rifle is to use it for around the house coyote control and on the Wildlife Management areas that require the use of rimfires or shotguns as a head/neck shooter on the smaller feral hogs. I like the idea of the vmax or supreme 34 grain bullet from Winchester but don't think they will hit anywhere near the 40 grain solid POI. How fasr does the 34 grain Winchester load go? The Remington web site says their vmax runs 2000fps.

My 2 cents, for what you intend to hunt ,I would recommend Win 40 gr. jhps. They hold together really well while expanding to around 35 cal. My 10-22 mag shoots the 34 gr. Supremes to almost the exact poi as the Win 40 gr. Dont asked me why but it does. I have taken both small hogs and coyotes with the 40s, haven't taken any game with the Supremes. The Win. 40s have always performed for me, the Supremes might do as well, but I suspect that they won't penertrate as deep. I'm not a big fan of solids, but that is just me!!

I went to Walmart and they did not have any Winchester solids, they did have Win. HP's.  They did though have both solid and Hollow point 40 grain CCI ammo so I bought a box each.  I want to test the "solids" just to see how well they penetrate. I remember years sgo shooting a Winchester solid into a clay bank at the river bottom and it expanded without coming apart. Looked like a full juacketed mushroom.  I want to find some of CCI's TNT ammo also and though the premier stuff was a bit expensive.

Like any 22 ya got to shoot them all to see what works the best. My Henry loves the CCI FMJ it will shoot under a half a inch but I would rather have a bullet that is not FMJ for hunting. The Rem Vmax showed some promise and I just got a new box as when I got my Henry a couple of years ago I had only a couple of the Rem shells left and was not impressed with the misfires I had got out of a Sav striker. THis is a new box and from what I have read Rem has taken care of the misfire problem. Because of the misfire problem I hesitated until now as the local gun shop charges 11 bucks a box for these.  :(   My gun hated the Winchester ammo but then maybe the next lot may be better who knows until you try. The first box of CCI TNT that I tried was not that impressive but the second box showed some promise at just over a inch at 50 yards.

BOTTOM LINE IS what some one says works in their gun may not work in yours worth a darn so you have to test them all in your particular gun to see its likes and dislikes.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I tested the rifle and ammo today. I mounted an old 4x weaver with fine crosshairs, boresighted and started shooting in my backyard range. I started at the 25 yard line and had it sighted in perfectly woith the CCI FMJ in 4 shots. Very accurate ammo as I could consistantly hit bullet holes with the next four shots. The old weaver has it's paralex set at 100 yards and the old tech optics aren't that good anyway so I was pleased. NextI started shooting the CCI HP's. They impacted a half inch high and an inch to the right. They seemed a bit less accurate but not much, since I was shooting non stop the barrel was getting warm but in 12 shots I had it shooting dead center at 25 yards. All this in 20 shots total. I will set upa target at 50 yards after Hurrican Rita comes thru sunday night. My bullet test shot was setting three pop cans full of water in a line in front of an empty gallon freon can. The HP shattered all three and penetrated at least one side of the freon can leaving fragments inside the last pop can or what was left of it.  I guess for now I have found good ammo for this rifle.

There is lots of difference between 25 and 100 yards.  This ammo may be fine at 100 but you won't know until you shoot it.

I hope you like your .22 mag as much as I do mine.  I have three, with the favorite being a Winchester 9422M.

Theres a lot of difference at 50 yards and gusty 35 mph wind too. I went to the Dallas Market Hall gun show and picked up some CCI TNT ammo and tried it on my 50 yard range in the wind. It was actually moving me and the rifle around so I cut my testing short after 7 rounds. This ammo hits 1 1/4 inch high at 50 yards but the horizontal dispersion was a bit more than 2 inches as I was shooting quickly as the crosshairs moved across the aiming point.  Have to shoot another day!

Rickt300, if you are talking most accurate, then you will need to shoot all the mag ammo available. But for the game you mentioned, you could rule out quite a few, just based on bullet performance alone. Be careful and not select a bullet that blows apart to soon and doesn't give the necesary penetration.

good hunting to you!!!

The Winchester Dyna-Point 45 grain is the only round I have found
that performs well in all my .22 Mags. Some other rounds do better in specific guns, but all of mine like the Dyna-Point... That is very unusual
to find one round all your guns like.. I think i'll stick with it.

Today is much less windy.  I tested 3 types of CCI and got exactly what I wanted. I hac the TMJ.TNT and 40 grain JHP.  At 50 yards all three are capable of 1/2 inch groups. I sighted the TNT's in at 1 inch high at 50 and the JHP's hit just slightly lower and really good news the TMJ' hit right at 1/2 inch high right on top of the aiming point.  I found the light rifle a bit hard to hold perfectly still and my folding table is not especially solid either but good enough.  Monday I am going to the gun range and if I have time Iwill shoot it a 100 yards but my 270 is the real reason I am going.

So far this rifle is not picky as far as CCI goes and Iamhappyabout that.  Another thing 22 mag ammo aroundhere is not found in the great variety the long rifle is, kinda have to search around for it.

Tested the CCI TNT on a 20 pound Armadillo last nite.  This raider has woke me up three nites in a row so this time I grabbed the 22 mag and tested a TNT on him broadside. Rolled him. Checked him out this morning and found no exit hole but the entrance was a bit more than 1/2 inch. Perfect!

I shoot a Marlin 982VS in 22MAG. I love that gun. It likes the Remington 33 grain AccuTip-V. Good bullets. I also shoot the CCI Maxi Mag +V.
