Rear Sight Removal
« on: February 27, 2003, 04:34:46 PM »
I want to remove the rear sight assembly from a M48A. What can I run into for problems? Am I able to remove the screw on the bottom of the sleeve and tap it off? TIA

I assume (that's not good at this time of nite) your speaking of a mauser military boltaction rifle.  If so removing the retaining screw will need to be completed and the sight sleeve will have to be heated.  These are usually soldered to the barrel.  Have never worked with the M48A but all the variants I've worked with required the solder be melted to release the sleeve.  A propane torch should do just fine..  Be sure to heat as evenly as possible.. and remove the rear site elevator and it's spring to avoid removing the temper in these parts..

bumble,

We need a little more info to help out.  What are you trying to do?  Are you only trying to remove the rear sight ladder (on an M48 8mm Mauser)and leave the base, or are you attempting to remove the entire sight assembly? GunNut69 is correct about needing to heat up the soldering sleeeve on the barrel to remove.  It is prudent that you completely remove the barrel and action from the stock and handguard before attempting this.

Hey, sorry to be confusing. Yes I want to remove the entire rear sight assembly from a military mauser,  M48A.  I had a feeling that it was soldered on. I wanted to find out if it was or wasn't. I honestly wouldn't try to heat it up without removing it from the stock. My eyes are 50 or so now and I'm having a peep put on. I don't like the mauser rear sight as well as a peep; which isn't giving me problems as of yet. I know I could get by removing the elevator but I don't care for the looks that leaves. So I'll remove it all and modify a spare upper handguard to look similar to the 03-A3. Thanks abunch

bubble,

Would you settle for another approach....One that doesn't screw up the collectability of the milsurp?  If you do, then let me know and I'll fix you up with a peep sight system that is a whole lot better then the original.
