ammo question for a marlin 30/30
« on: September 22, 2005, 09:38:48 AM »
I have shot solid 1" 100 yd. groups with rem. 150's & 170's and also 170 silvertips. I am wanting to shoot a big 'ole hog this year and wondered what would be best, aside from Nos. Partitions?

Why aside from Nosler Partitions?  They hit like a sledge hammer.  And I can easily shoot sub 1" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with them.  I use the Federal Premium shells, and like them a lot for hunting.

I think the Nosler Partitions are good bullets, I just cannot afford a $25+ box of ammo for my 30/30. And the only ones making them seem to be Federal, and Grizzly. I would gladly buy some $10 partition loads

The 30/30 is probably the most popular hunting round here in Hawaii for pigs.  My neighbor dropped a 400lb. boar with 170 grain soft points, nothing fancy, just from the green box.  I use a .44 mag but the 30/30 is just fine main thing being shot placement, and use 170 for better penetration especially in shoulder shots thru their thick shields.

I watch the sales after hunting season.  Last year I bought four boxes for $12.00 per box.  They are consistent, drop deer like a much larger round, and work well in my Marlin.  To me there is no down side.

The silver tips would give you good penetration . If you like those nosler partitions that much get into reloading it would cost alot less and its alot of fun.

30 gr. of IMR 3031 behind the 170 gr. Nosler Partition.
