i have a 50 cal single shot cap and ball type  pistol that hasbeen modified to pistol primer and 44 250 gr. xtp and sabot 7 3/4 in fast twist barrel.of coarse my crony  ouits working before i can run this gun in it..how fast with 35 to 40 grs. pryo.do you think would be a good gueestamate???over 900 or below 900 fps>>this will not be the primary gun.this is to keeplast year from repeating itself..i wore scope ring <you know the big circle over your eye from scope to close>in the middle if my head because the doe came across the road in frount of my at 10 feet, i never shouldered the gun ...at under 20 yds this be fast enough????thanks jb

You may get that much (900fps), but I have never loaded a sabot in my 6"  50 cal. plains pistol. According to the Lyman BP Guide a 245 grn. conical would travel at that velocity when stoked with 40 grns of Pyrodex. What I have done is loaded a 350 grn TC Maxi conical on top of 40 grns. of FFFG Goex,  :eek: sort of a howdah load that mimics a healthy loaded .44 Special in recoil.

thanks that tells me about what i needed.....hope your hi and dry.a hunting buddy has family in running from the storm,from houston....have you killed any thing with your pistol and that heavy load???????jb

I'm high and dry, but the only things i've killed with that load is paper.... Hope I get meat with it next deer season. If Rita has'nt run off all the deer on my land in Chambers County (Anahauc) :( .
