Mauser 96 Project Gun...Dope Slap for me

Hey Guys,

I just finished putting a new stock together for my old swede. It was a sporterized package when I bought it with a crappy synthetic stock and the original military trigger. I replaced the double hump with a Timney and shot it for quite a few years. I found a decent semi-inletted stock on eBay, finished and bedded it.

Finally made it to the range today. Got set up, chambered a round, pulled the trigger......ka-chunk. No boom and not even a dimple on the primer.

I removed the bolt and dis-assembled it. The firing pin and spring both look good. The spring drops with good force when the trigger is pulled. One odd thing is the safety will move to the upright position but won't flip fully to the rightmost position unless the bolt sleeve is unscrewed two full turns.

What am I missing here? I've got a feeling it's something simple and I'll give myself the Homer dope slap when I figure it out.

I truly am not the sharpest tool in the shed!! I never cut the stock to allow the bolt to fully lock in the action.

I will assume you found the problem.  Now go out and enjoy a fine shooter!  I stumbled into Swede's by accident and now I'm hooked.

Thanks ringo, I got. I knew it was something simple. A couple of minutes with the dremel tool cured the problem. Two more coats of tru-oil and she'll be set.

She's a sweet shooter. They just changed our deer reg's here, allowing rifles instead of shotguns, so this will be her first deer deer season. 140 grain slug and some slow powder and we'll be eatin venison  :grin:

Try 46 gr of RE22 under a Hornady 140 SST. You'll like it!

Amen brother, amen!  My first year in Canada I nearly froze.  To help get through winter I went out and bought an old Swedish M96 to refiish.  It turned out so nice that in succeeding winters I bought 2 more for the same reason.  Now I have 3 of them, the oldest was made in 1900.  These old gems really shoot well.  I'm thrilled with mine, but would never manage to sportirize them.  I figured some day their numbers are going to dwindle, and they'll be worth a lot more in pristine military clothing.  Either way, restore or sportirize, it's a terrific firearm.  Just my own opinion.  Best wishes.

You just have to be careful you don't short shank the bolt action when chambering a second round (like I did  :cry: ).  Shot at a deer at about 250 yards in heavy wind.  Hit it, but did not knock it over.  Went to shoot again.  Felt the bolt kick back (cocking) and pulled it back to look (jamb).
Missed out on a second shot.  Deer went up the ridge and the second shot was someone elses.  oops.  Sure shoots swede though.
