Old eyes

I guess because of age I can just not see well enough to hit small targets at 50 yards. I can still see gallon buckets at 100 but the 2 inch are dissapearing. My question is that I've decided to scope one of my handguns for deer. I have a Ruger Super Black Hawk (.44) and a Taurus Raging Bull  (454). I'd like suggestions from folks who have scoped a pistol as to which way to go. I think I want a 2x something Leupold. As far as mounts my local smith says the best Black Hawk scope mount has to be drilled into the top strap. ( I don't want to drill my baby). The Raging Bull has a factory avaliable mount that attaches to the ribbed barrel. I've never scoped any pistol and need advice. I want to scope one for deer hunting out to 100 yards. I can hit most of the time a gallon bucket, but at least I can see the bucket. Help please.

I used to hunt with a Super Blackhawk with open sights because I wouldn't drill mine either. Now I hunt mainly with Thompson Contenderts and Encores, but, I still have some scoped revolvers. The top rib mount for the Taurus works great. It is a strong and very solid set up.
There are other ways to scope your Ruger. Granted, alot of gunsmiths will tell you that drilling is the strongest way to go, but not for me.
B-SQUARE has a mount that will use the screw holes from the sights. I would take a look at these befor doing anything drastic.

the BSQUARE mount is not as solid as one drilled and tapped onto the strap! That said ,you will be able to hunt deer to 100 yds easily using one.As far as scopes go ,I'd opt for a 4x fixed. The 2x seems to make targets SMALLER to me. I have used a 1.5x4 also.this is larger than I like on my revolvers.  jh

I just found out no one in my area carries Leupold pistol scopes and I won't buy anything I cain't look at first. Any other brands that should hold up under the .454? I wanted to look at a T/C scope but no dealer either. Just cain't win.  :(

What a dilemma? I solved mine by purchasing a new Ruger SBH 'Hunter'!! Mu 'Smith' was already D&T'd so scoping it was no big deal I have the Hunter fitted with a Leupold 4X, and it is akrit, but I'm gonna swap it off to one of my TC barrels for the 2X. I prefer the lower powers myself, especially on the revolvers.
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

I tried a nogunsmith mount and then had my 1st 629 drilled and tapped. I understand you not wanting to drill the SBH. I'm unimpressed with pistol scopes and went with a dot sight. Everyone is always willing to spend other people's money. That said, if I wanted a SBH with a scope I'd get a Hunter model if drilling wasn't an option. A scope that holds up on a 454 would have to be a good one. If I did scope a handgun it would be a 1x.

How ever you mount it, I would go with an red-dot. I've used leupold, Nikon, Redfield, and Burris scopes on my revolvers for hunting. I switched to a Red-Dot about 10 yrs. ago and will never go back to a scope.
They are easier to learn to shoot with both eye's open and are plenty accurate enough to at least 100yds. If you learn to shoot with both eye's open, all you see is a red-dot on your target and drop the hammer.
I've taken a dozen deer with mine from 10yds. to over 100yds. Don't worry about batteries either, I turn mine on when I get to my hunting location, and turn it off when I leave. I carry a spare, but have never had to use it. Jerry

Weaver makes a good No Gunsmith mount for both SBH and Blackhawks.

Volshooter, these guys have mounts...
« Reply #9 on: February 28, 2003, 05:18:57 PM »
but they require drilling as well  , but they have one that is like a weaver mount so that most red dot sights can be mounted.
I have a Ruger Hunter that I would like to use a red dot on myself!

I have a B' square mount on my Taurus 454 and I to did not want to drill my gun. It works great for my Halo sight don't see why it wouldn't work for a scope. I have shot several full house loads with no problems . And if it does come lose I can take it off without ugly holes left in my gun. Just my 2-cents worth ,good luck to Ya !

I think I'm going to use Taurus's rib mount  for the RB.454. It uses the vent ribbed barrel to mount the scope base and requires no drilling. I'm gonna leave the Ruger (.44) alone because it is perfect for most of my hunting (less than 75 yards) Other than putting some Hogue's on the Ruger Mr. Bill produced the perfect pistol for hunting.

Scope wise I am looking at a red dot or a low power. Looks like I'm going to have to order one from a catalog since dealers round here don't carry pistol optics. Cabela's has a red dot for 160 or so. ANY input is wanted because I have no experience with pistol optics.

Thanks, Rick

How well a dot sight will hold up to a 454 I can't say. Dr Optik has a small unit like a Tasco Optima but advertised as stronger. Aimpoint sights are supposed to be good. I have a Trijicon Reflex sight on my .44 mag. They aren't cheap but don't require batteries. For hunting I like a small MOA dot.Mine has a 4 MOA dot. The dot covers about 4" at 100 yds.

I have a Taurus 608  , 357  with  their rib mount base . I have a Leupold - Gilmore 35 mm 4MOA  red dot on it.   I ordered  both  a Leupold  red dot and a Ultra Dot to see which one I like best . The Leupold won out , I seems to me clearer  with my old eyes . They both are very good but cost more then most red dots . You will need  to use 3 or 4 scope rings with the 454  ,I would go with 4 , extra rings for the Leupold are $10 ea.   Here are the two sights , www.gilmoresports.com   and www.ultradotusa.com  on the ultra dot sight go to dealers and you will see Larry's Guns they  have the best price and free shipping.

I had a no drill/no tap Weaver scope mount on my Super Blackhawk.  Never had any problems with it.  I was shooting some pretty stout loads and the scope stayed put.

You can't go wrong with a Leupold.  I just received used one that I ordered from Ed's Contenders.  He's one of GB's advertisers.  He's great to deal with.
