bought a new browning gold
« on: September 24, 2005, 02:18:42 PM »
i got a loan to consolidate some debt and wouldnt ya know it, i had a little left over when it was taken care of!

sooooo

since i have only one shotgun and 7 rifles i thought i would give my Winchester 1300 a friend.

I knew i wanted 20 gauge and i wanted something that you can pass down to kids or take to a really nice trap shoot. something that is real quality and made right and built to last.

i looked at remington 11-87s and franchi 48s and none fit right or they had features i didnt like. finally the guy at the shop (i buy a lot from him so he goes out of his way to help) mentioned that browning is offering $100 back on gold shotguns.

it fit perfectly and looks even better. i hesittated at the price but he said he would knock 25 bucks off the price to start with and then the 100 cash back made it only 100 bucks more than the remingtons and franchis and such.

so i did it and i love it. i took it apart to clean and it was easy to do. i then went to the range tonight and threw myself some clay birds and hit most of em easily. it really does fit and handle nicely.

it was fun, trying to throw the birds and then get the gun up in time. i started doing what the exhibition shooters do, throw em by hand and then get the gun to your shoulder. i did pretty good once i learned to shoot em on their way down rather than trying to catch them still rising. gives you more time.

so i am very pleased. does anyone else have comments? i dont hear as much about the brownings as i do the other brands.

Shot my brothers a few times. Liked it a lot. After doing a bunch of research not unlike what you did. I went with the Sx2. Only Thing I'm missing is the speed load feature, never had it on my 870, shouldn't miss it. Best thing, fewer moving parts, less hastle.   Both designs rock!
Not  a bad choice on the BG. :agree:

i wanted a small game gun and i got a good one. it was kind of an impulse buy but not one i will regret anytime soon lol.

i never considered a browning or even held one until today and the guy gave it to me and it felt like someone built it for me so i took it home.  :)

as i understand it, the SX2 is based on the gold. so if thats true does the gold have the lightning-fast reputation like the sx2 or does the winchester have some features mine doesnt have?

Hi SX2 i went with the Win SX2 NWTF 24inch barrel shotgun. I like it out at Anderson Custom Shotgun and Chokes. Keith said the the SX2 was like the Gold. But the Win had the beef up inside parts and they didnt jam like the Gold's do plus i got a 100.00 rebate too. VM

i cleaned mine good and shot a whole box of field loads and not one hiccup. maybe people arent breaking theirs in right if they jam?

BG's seemed to have a rep for FTF's for a while. I'm not basing on anyhting other than word of mouth. Haven't heard of that lately. My brother has had no problems with his.

The Sx2 has a more squared off bolt assembly and no speed load feature. It also has a higher, wider vent rib (which I like a lot)

You have a good gun there Matt  8)

I have 2 Golds.  One is walnut hunter 28 inch barrel the other is the euro which they now call classic in 26 inch barrel.  I love them very much.  Probably my favorite auto yet.  They I have had both brand new since 1999 and neither one has ever jammed.  Low brass 3inch mag  no probs or hick ups.  They mostly do waterfowl hunting along the Missouri River in sand country.  I never for get a good friend  in 2001 that I was in business school with.  He couldn't stop bragging about his super black eagle.  We we had our shot guns sitting in the same place while we put out decoys.  A huge gust came up and covered out shotguns with sand.  Well we were about done when a huge flock of ducks started  landing within 20 feet of us.  We swiftly went to shore and grabbed our guns blew them off and started blasting away.  He got one shot off and jammed while I shot the rest of the day no problems.   He sat and and tried and tried to get the gun to work again.  He finally took it to a gun smith and still had jamming problems after that form time to time.  All I can say is the Benelli is a very sweet gun but it is not any more jam proof than the gold, that is for sure.  They can say all they want but a gas operation is just as good.  Inertia driven, isn't that what the A-5 used way back in the early 1900's.   I know they have theirs in the stock rather than under the front grip but is it really any different when comes to it????  In auto rifles you never hear of Inertia driven unless its a 22. So why do shotguns need it??? :D

i have owned a mossberg 9200 and shot my dad's 11-87 a lot and this gold cycles faster than either of them. it really moves!!

i know when i shoot either of the other guns i can hear the action "chunk chunk" slamming open and shut but this one is so smooth and fast i cant tell.

i am pretty happy with this one, dont think it will be leavin my collection anytime soon, if ever.

A-5 is recoil operated. Inertia is a bit different.

i almost bought a franchi, which is yet another altogether different semiautomatic system. its barrel actually recoiled back into the receiver when it shot. interesting.

i liked the browning i bought instead of the franchi because of the fit and finish on it and plus it fit me much better...plus the gas system will dampen recoil a bit more too.

and that $100 rebate didnt hurt things either.

I think you will like your Browning, I love mine. The FTF reports were from very early 3.5" Golds, and the problem was resolved a long time ago.

I have had plenty of SX2's and Browning Golds apart. I have not noticed any difference on the "beefiness" of one over the other. The only jams I have known are from an extremely dirty gas piston, or the action tube in the stock. On mine, I clean the piston every so often, but never have cleaned the action tube. No problems at all.

I have dunked it in water, had ice covering 3/4 of it, dropped it in mud...you name it, it just keeps on ticking.
