Light barrel in 17 remington
« on: September 24, 2005, 04:50:02 PM »
I just sent out a 17 HMR barrel from a 17 HMR handi rifle to be re-chambered to 17 remington for my SB2 handi frame.  Yes, it does fit, the center fire frame puts the fireing pin right in the middle of the HMR case when fitted to the SB2 frame.  It is a 22 inch bull barrel, and it needs to loose some weight for a good carry rifle.  What contour would work without getting too thin?  Was also thinking of fluting the rear half and then a straight taper to about .550 at the muzzel from in front of the hand guard?  Anyone ever done a custom 17 cal center fire barrel?  Larry

Id like more information on this becaues Id like 17rem also. How much is that running you to get it done? Is it as simple as buying the 17HMR barrel and getting it rechambered into 17rem? Another really good question is that if the rifleing will be able to stablisize that much larger projectile?

You have to fit the barrel to the center fire frame, an easy task, you need to modify the ejector to allow it to drop down to chamber a rimless cartridge, also no big deal. An ejector for a .223 will not work, they are different shapes.  Without any barrel tapering or fluting it is costing me the price of the barrel ($65.00?) plus $70.00 for chambering and shipping.  Larry
