Foster Knives "Weishuhn Hunter" - Spectacular!!!
« on: September 25, 2005, 02:19:14 AM »
Greetings!

I purchased a Foster Knives "Weishuhn Hunter - Expedition Grade" knife locally yesterday, and I am impressed beyond reason with it!

Here is a link to the company that makes the knife, I got the 2nd one down on the page, the green canvas Micarta handled "expedition grade" version:

http://www.fosterknives.com/weishuhn.php

I paid $90 for this knife locally including tax, although I've seen webpages advertising them for as little as $75.

I absolutely LOVE everything about this knife - the quality of construction is fantastic, the blade geometry is beautiful and functional, the handle feels PERFECT in my hands, and the finger grips on the top and bottom of the front portion of the handle feel REALLY nice and allow for very secure fine-tuned control of the blade.  The knife came from the factory EXTREMELY sharp, in a high-quality leather sheath that just seems to "fit" the knife in a rugged and aesthetic way.  The blade steel is 154CM stainless, which requires a bit of extra care keeping it dry and oiled than something like 440C due to the higher carbon content of 154CM, but the extra edge-holding ability makes up for the extra maintenance required in my personal opinion.  The Micarta handle panels look and feel great and have the perfect amount of "grippyness" to them and the lanyard hole is the perfect size for just about any kind of cord, rope, or leather strap you want to use.  All-in-all this is the perfect all-around medium size fixed blade camp knife.  I can't think of even one bad thing to say about this knife...  I would gladly pay $250 for a knife of this quality and not think twice about it.

All-in-all, I give this knife 5 stars out of 5 - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Best wishes,
Bawko

P.S. DISCLAIMER - I do not work for Foster Knives, I don't know anyone who does, and I'm not being paid anything to write this by anyone.  Just love the knife!

It is a good looking knife and I do like it but it's really a Loveless design. Dunno why they wanna give Weishunn credit for it cuz Loveless made an identical one to it over 20 years ago.

Yep, it's a Loveless.  He designed so many great knives, not only for himself but for other makers, that it's real hard to keep track of them all.  Nice, simple knife, though the original Loveless dropped the point a little more, which would make it a tad bit more comfortable when used upside down; not a big thing though.  They don't state whether the ATS-34 was cryogenically frozen or not, meaning its probably not, which is the only way to get optimim performance from that steel, but ATS-34 will do alright just with a normal heat treat.  At that price, your getting what seems to be a decent knife, which you seem to be more than a little fond of.  In the end, that's what matters most.
