30-30 pointed bullets !!
« on: September 25, 2005, 02:23:27 AM »
Hello from Georgia,
I was curious if anyone else is using the pointed bullets in their NEF single shot rifles. The .30 caliber bullets available from Nosler, Sierra, Barnes an others offer a performance boost for the "old 30-30". My uncle and I have been loading pointed bullets in 30-30 cases for years and have used then to great success. The 150gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip loaded to a max load with either Varget or IMR3031 will produce ballistics equal to some .308Win loads. These rounds are accurate and effectively extend the range of the rifle when compared to the more traditional round nose bullets. We have been shooting these bullets in our lever guns for years as well but ONLY if inserted into the chamber ONE AT A TIME !!! The pointed bullets must NEVER be loaded into a tubular magazine because of the risk of the bullet striking the primer of the round ahead of it causing it to ignite and starting a VERY DANGEROUS chain reaction. Loaded one at a time however, it gives the gun a big boost in long range accuracy.
The wide range of options of .30 caliber bullets and the accuracy of most handis should be of interest to anyone shooting the "old 30-30".
We have even loaded some 100gr. bullets to max load and man are they fast !!  I am looking forward to hearing your feedback. Thanks.
Dave

Welcome :D

There is already a thread going on this subject..even though the posted wanted to use a mod 94 as a 2 shot..most guys here that reload use spitzers,SST's ,BT, and a few other types in their 30-30....http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=72597

If you use the search feature at the top of this page you will find this has been discussed on several times.

Good Luck..

Well...with a nice Handi Rifle...one shot is all you need.  Ha Ha. I keep one of the Uncle Mikes bullet holders on the stock though.
...But...the 30-30 in a lever-gun....It dosent have to be a single shot...like somebody else mentioned.....one in the chamber, and one in the mag is safe for hunting purposes.  Of course..do not carry it like that if you are not in your hunting area.  Two shots are certainly better than one.    But.....are pointed bullets better than soft roundd-nose bullets that are designed for the 30-30 velocities to expand properly???????  You might be able to get that spitzer out there a little further .....but....it is probably designed for 30-06/308/300 velocities, and the further it goes....the less it will expand!
There just ain't nothing like an elcheapo 150/170 gr Hornady soft roundnose in a 30-30 for dispatching deer and bear and Elk withhin 100 yds.

P.S.  In my Avatar picture, I am brandishing my first Contender in 30-30 Winchester.  I use 150 gr Hornady round-nose bullets, or just use factory 30-30 ammo if I am feeling lazy.  This is my only Contender barrel that has NEVER seen a scope.  It is just too undignified to put a scope on a 14" 30-30 pistol.  I have plenty of scoped rifles that I use for hunting...but that 30-30 in a pistol with just rifle sights has got to be about the most reliable and portable 'back-up' for hunting that anyone couldd possibly imagine. the spitzer bullets are designed to perform at 30/30 velocities, have a friend that used one on a deer and the deer run off, they do group much better for shooting though, for a deer bullet try the Sierra 125 gr fn/hp ,

peppertx:

Sierra has 2 spitzer bullets they recomend for the 30-30 single shots...they are the 125 grain SPT bullet #2120 and the 135 grain SPT SSP (single shot pistol) bullet # 7350...both will work good. Their normal spitzer bullets are not recomended...on pg.#929 Sierra 5th edition you'll find the following information.

Quote
2 notable exceptions to the rule are the 125 grain Spitzer and the 135 grain SSP bullets. With their thinner jacket and softer cores, these bullets will expand quite well at contender velocities.
