Are the weaver base and rings any good or would be better off to go get some steel rings and base?

I think that the Weaver Grand Slams are steel.  I have used a set of Weaver #97 aluminum bases on a Remington with no problems.  The aluminum Leupold Rifleman bases from Walmart are a waste of time.  They are too soft and one set was drilled off center.  

If I had to do it again I would get steel bases.  
The best rings that I have found were recommended here:  Burris Signature Zee rings.  These have the plastic inserts between ring and scope.  They are also Weaver style.  You won't regret spending some more for the Burris rings.

I've had a scope mounted on a .300WM for a lot of years in Weaver mounts with no problems.  I shoot the gun maybe 300 rounds a year.  These mounts are steel but not the grand slams.
