I posted this in the Bow hunt section, but I wanted to drop a line in here with the Turkey folks as well.

I took a nice Fall Gobbler with my Bow this past Friday. A 17yd shot running away from me. I was spotting & stalking in a brushy cedar stand where the deer and turkeys like to stage before heading into the fields at dusk. I surprised the Tom and when he took off, I drew & fired.

This was classic fall turkey hunting by patterning the birds and then planning on how to get close enough to shoot.

A friend, my 8 year old son and I were hanging my deer stand yesterday when we heard turkeys coming our way.

Lo and behold, 26 of 'em came within 10 yards of us as we stayed motionless.  They were hens and young birds and I think a pretty good tom was holding well back behind them.

We had to stay "frozen" for about 5 minutes and I told my son he had just experienced something very few 8 year olds ever get to see.

I am sure if I had had my bow in hand, they would not have shown up, BUT they did and we sure did enjoy watching 'em up close.

That happened to me also when I was in my stand.  I had 16 of them marching single file down a deer run and right under my stand.  It was pretty funny to watch them.

Turkeys seem to be everywhere in PA this year. I went out the other day to a new spot that ran along some powerlines.; hunting fox squirrel but thinking maybe a turkey also.  Bunch of wild grape growing in there.  Got to the top of the mountain, and said to myself,"dang, this looks like a turkey spot".  Fifteen minutes later heard a whole bunch of yelping and about 20 hens came by about 75-80 yds away.  Selected the 22 Hornet barrel on my trusty, old Savage 24V and took a hen that looked particularly tasty.  She dropped in her tracks with the bullet hitting her in the throat, just above the body/throat juncture.  The Hornet with a Speer 46 gr flatnose behind 4.2 grs of Unique(a little over 1500 fps) is my ultimate small game/turkey round out to around 100 yds.  Cleaned/plucked the bird out in the woods, and stayed and collected 4 fox squirrels and two grays.  Right near sundown the flock came flying back up the mountain to roost, and a little later a huge Gobbler came strutting past.  Put the sights on him and whispered "bang".  Nice day.
