Thinking about planting some exotic deer on our place.  So far we are thinking about Fallow Deer but I'm asking for opinions/suggestions here.  What exotic(s)would you plant in Northern California Mountain area(3,500+/- feet elevation) that is mostly Oak with a mixture of brush?  Lawdog

How about Axis. It is the best eating deer I have tasted.
Giant Sika deer are nice also.  :D

Sitka would do well in that terrain, they are very hearty and do well in arid climates, you could pick them up pretty cheap in Texas,i have no idea about the laws pertaining to transplanting exotics but i would study them very closly so you dont end up with a legal hassle.
If it aint fair chase its FOUL,and illegal in my state!

Nonya's advice is sound. First check the legality of it. Because of CWD many states will not allow stocking any cervid.

But given that it was legal and I had a place to do it I'd stock both fallow and axis. They are my favorites and if I had enough land I'd sure want them on it. Here in Bama tho it's completely illegal.

I love both the Axis and Fallow. I believe to transport them into Texas they have to be certified to be "disease free" or something to that effect.

Because they are both so adaptable and will edge out the native deer some states may not allow importation or may require high fence.

Personally if I had the land and the money for the high fence I would raise them instead of cattle.

Lawdog, contact Brady ranch and see what they had to do and then check with your local area and see what you would need for importing deer.  :D

I have already sent a registered letter off to California DFG to see what “hoops” I’m going to have to jump through to meet their regulations for importation of exotic deer.  Now I’m just waiting to see which gets here first, DFG’s reply or Christmas.     Lawdog

Break out your red hat, you will likely see Christmas first.  :D

Do you have a high fence?     If so, I would go with the Axis and Fallow.   Beautiful, big, reproduce like rabbits and great eating.      I don't care for the Sika.
Good luck with your state's laws!

Actually that’s what I am betting on.   :D   For the last two years you don’t get any kind of swift response from DFG.  The Governor has cut back on field wardens, office staff in Sacramento and even tried to borrow money from their budget(that we did manage to get stopped) so getting anything from DFG is a struggle.  Still doesn’t stop me from gathering all the information possible to put before them should I have to.  Most likely will have to go through a few hearings knowing DFG.  They love to hold hearings.  Lawdog

Lawdog, going to there hearings is the only way I was able to get things done and it is always a long drawn out process. I guess the figure if you stick with the they will help, but they are betting you will just give up.

That is what DFG though 12 years ago when I applied for a special permit to thin the doe population on my property.  Took them 15 months, 2 hearings and a report by a game biologist but I got the permit.  Now the deer herd on my property is better than ever.  Went through the same thing 20 years ago when I wanted to plant Merriam Turkey's.  Although that time it was easier.  Only took 3 months as others were doing it all over the state.  Lawdog
