OK the wind just won't co-operate with me and i haven't had the chance to get a 200 or 300yrd group with my sportster. It shoots under an inch at 100yrds with Hornaday 17gr bullets. What have y'all gotten with youse guyses 17s? at 200 and/or 300yrds.

FYI this thread is also to liven up the quieting H&R/NEF Rimfire section.

You're right, it is quiet here...maybe they're all out shooting?  :)

I'm getting under an inch at 100yds as well. The only times I've tried shooting at 200 was with an older 6x scope and it was windy, and I only got 3-4" at that distance. Haven't had it at the range in a while; mostly plinking, and it does THAT very well! I'm not sure I'd even try it at 300; that little 17gr bullet is going to run out of energy in a big hurry. Now that I have a better scope, I think I'll try it at longer ranges and see how it shoots.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

Ya wind just won't settle down to really try at 200yrds. as far as it is for a .17 to go 300 the scope is graduated out that far so worth a try.

My Savage 93 .17 gets a 5-shot group of about .75" at 100 yds, with Federal 17 gr. V-MAX, which by the way, most people don't think its a good bullet for squirrels cuz i ruins meat but i shot three fox squirrels this morning and the meat was fine. anyway, the farthest group i had was 175 yds. and it was a 3-shot group of 1.25" with the same ammunition.

I've only shot one group at 200 since I got my new scope and it was about 1.5".  I don't have a 300 yard range so I havn't gotten a chance to shoot that far yet.  By the way, I'm using a Marlin 917vs with rifle basix trigger and swift premier 6-24x50 scope.

Great shooting Andy2590!!! I am sure that those gophers in western PA are shaking in their boots now!!! By the way, My wife is from Western PA, McKeesport actually. I have done some hunting in the area and it's great!!! Had a wonderful time hunting with my Brother-in-Law and some of his friends in Clearfield, up on the Mountain, felt better after I found my way out of the woods though. I wasn't lost really, just got turned around somehow!!!!....<><.... :-D

Where did you place your shots on the fox squirrels?  Body or head?
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Yeah that's strange if none have ruined meat with a mid body shot. Then again a squarrel doesn't have much meat in the middle anyway. Those V-Max are explosive when they contact bone. Very explosive for such a tiny bullet. It's a great round.
