anyone make a round ball in-line ?
« on: September 27, 2005, 02:21:52 PM »
I want a in-line with a slow twist rate so I can shoot patched round balls
anyone make'em ? The price of sabots is rediculous! and if I cast my own Maxi-balls I have to lube them and buy felt bore buttons which are also
very expensive.A patched round ball over some powder with a slow twist
rate in a modern break-open design using a 209 primer simple in design
any manufactures listening ?

You might be the only one in America that wants one of those.  Can't imagine too many inliners wanting to shoot a ball.  Kinda funny to think about though.

I never though of it before but I think its a good idea.

Why not take the accuracy that a round ball is capable of with a barrel with the correct twist and put it on a inline?  You would have all the features of the inline(i.e. scope, easy cleaning, hotter ignition) and not have to pay for sabots and be tied to Gander Mountain or Cabela's everytime you run out of ammo.

A .58 cal inline w/a 1 in 66" twist would be pretty good medicine out to 100 yards are so.  I hate the hassle of lubing Maxi-balls.  Can't get much cheaper shooting than a patched round ball.

I'll stick to the traditional sidelocks myself but I can still shoot with open sights.  I sure am glad I don't have to shoot plastic through them.

I have shot flintlocks since 1977....Once I get to 100 grs ff  I have to use hornets nesting between the ball and powder to keep from burning through the patches...no real problem, as my deer load in my .54 is 80gr ff and my squirrel load in my .40 is 40gr ff...I can hit a 3 inch circle to 100 yards with either...which is plenty good for deer hunting if you are setup properly...If you want to shoot prb...get a sidelock...If you want a cheaper load to shoot in an inline...call MMP and buy bulk sabots and go to the local gunshop and buy Hornady pistol bullets...If you want to shoot the 240 or 300 .429 Hornady hollow points buy the green MMP sabots....if you want to shoot the 250 or 300 .451 bullets buy the black standard sabots...

I would love a nice inline with blued barrel, walnut stock with a roundball twist. T/C or GM should put put an accessory barrel for the older guns or hell just make the whole gun, I would buy one. Have it in 209 ignintion and get the adapter for small pistol primers, much less fouling that way. Jack.

Some of the older inlines featured 1-48 twists and I think CVA made one with a 1/60 twist, but I cannot recall the name. You may have trouble finding them though as they are close to 20 years old.

That aside I used to own a CVA with a 1/32 twist that shot roundballs accurately with 90 gr of RS. I never had the opportunity to see what that did on a deer though as I sold it before the next season.

brudford, have you tried prb's in your gun? i have a cva optima that i shoot powerbelts in but decided to try a patched ball in. it shoots great all the way from 50 to 85 grains of 777. i have not tried any higher measurements because i am too cheap!! i tried the buffalo ballets and they shoot good too but i cleaned the nasty lube off of them and used my wonderlube. i like sidelocks but i really like the removeable breech plug on the inline for cleaning. i killed 6 deer with the powerbelts last year but this year i am going to use the ballets. i put an overpowder button between the powder and the ballet and between the powder and the patch. by the way the balls i am using are .490 and the patch is .10. i might try  .15 patch but i know i cannot get two .10 patches down. good luck to ya, hope this helped.

NEF Huntsman = 70 gr 777, (2) .10 lubed patches, .490 Hornady round ball = cloverleaf at 50 yds... Bet it would be great in many inlines.
In the paper here in NC, the last 2 book bucks were reportedly taken with inline with pbr... I use Powerbelt for hunting, but again have had excellent  range / plinking results with pbr.... I beleve the hunting success stories!

If you have a TC Encore you can get a .50 barrel in 1:48 twist for it which is not a true roundball twist, but should shoot them well. My .54 Renegade with 1:48 shoots the roundball very accurately, with open sights too.

I am going to try my Sidekick with PRB next time I go out with 2F Black. I will try what I have on hand first, which is .490 ball and .15 patch and start at 50 grains and go all the way to 100 grains. For hunting, I would think anything 70 grains or over, if it shoots pretty accurately will be fine for whitetails. I am hoping it patters nicely with 80-90 grain, if so, I will use the PRB over the Maxiball. I will not try to shoot the PRB over 50 yards, and will keep my shots at deer at or under said range also. Jack.
