17 MACH2 to 17 Reming conversion
« on: September 29, 2005, 06:36:39 PM »
I got the new 17 MACH2 barrel today for my project.  I had made some tools to do the barrel fitting, like a plate to hold the barrel straight when I ground the pivot to get the barrel fit right and a couple of plates to clamp on to get the latch shelf straight and flat.  It is now a perfect fit to the SB2 frame and the fireing pin hits in the center of the chamber, life is good.
Talked to the Smith today and I am going to flute the barrel from the chamber to the front of the forarm and then a straight taper to the muzzle at .550.  I put the plastic stock parts on the SB2 to save a little weight, the forarm is about the same weight as the wood one, but the butstock is much lighter than the wooden one.  It did seem kind of a shame to just take the barrel apart without shooting the little MACH2, looks like it could be fun.  I will post some pictures as this thing moves along.  Now I have a never fired RF action with wood stock parts, guess I will need to make something out of it also.  Larry

Best of luck with your project Larry. Check your PM's regarding the rimfire action. I have a suggestion/request regarding it's future...<><....

I remember someone in the Yahoo forums doing the same thing but never heard the results.  Good luck.

I just got a 17 HMR and if the 17 Rem is nearly twice as fast it has to be devestating.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Larry,
Be advised that removing material from the outside of the barrel will alter the dimensions of the bore.  Before doing any turning or fluting you might want to slug the bore and see what you have as a baseline.

Wife says the barrel is at the house, and I am stuck 1,000 miles south of Hawaii for another two weeks.  I did slug the bore just for fun when I got it, pushed a .177 pellet through it, and it was exactly .172.  I went for a straight taper from in front of the forearm to the muzzel at .550 inch, hope it saves a little weight, may look a little odd, never know.  I will shoot it as soon as I get back, should be a lot of fun.  Got some 20gr bullets that should do about 4,400 fps out of it.  Larry
