I have been hanging around here about a month, and you guys have me intirgued with this CAS .
Need another hobby , been shooting trad. archery for 13 yrs. and I think I have all the bows I need (20 custom bows) , so its time to start down another road , sort of a post mid-life crisis , I'm 55 ,now to the question

Been looking at AWA Peacekeeper birdshead and thunder or maybe the U.S. Firearms Rodeo, what do you think anything better ,in that price range? Found the AWA's on the net for $399 , good price ? Any help would be appreciated .
Can't buy everything at once so the pistols come first . The only trouble will be it will cost me twice a much , because if I start the wife will want to do it to, great woman

AWA bought Armi San Marcos, and reportedly improved the quality control. USFA used to use Uberti parts, they say now that all their parts are made in USA. The quality is high, and the color case is as good as or better than Colt. The Rodeo, however won't be that fancy, but should be a solid assembly. The standard line from USFA is very fine in fit and finish, but more expensive than Italian guns, but a better looking piece than the Colt Cowboy for a similar price. Also looka t Navy Arms and Cimarron. Ruger if you don't mond the weight and mechanism. They are built to last....

Bill, I'm not trying to steer you in any direction, but just for your consideration, Cap and Ball revolvers can be had at a much lower price, and still have a gun more than reliable enough for Cowboy, and extra fun on it's own. That's a great buy on the Peacekeepers. Others in the same vein to consider are the Rodeos if you can live with the finish. If not, you can strip the finish off and have an American made "antique" for around $500. You want it in 45? You want it in 45. Oh, there are some in 38 around on a special run but I think they are about gone. Another to look at are the NEW Great Westerns from EMF but I haven't seen any price break on them. They seem to be going for more than $600 and people are happy with them. People were happy with Peacekeepers too when they were going for mid-600s.

Wife? Share guns for a while. You may be like me and love the guns but not the game.

If you don't mine buying off the internet check out www.auctionarms.com and www.gunsandammoauctions.com. While they are auctions many of the guns sell for the starting price so you know you are the "winner" when you first bid.

I got my Winchester 97 and Marlin lever action both off these two sights. Other than having to wait about 10 days it wasn't at all bad. Even bought one Marlin and then worked with the seller to get a different style (it worked OK for me but would NOT recommend this method to anyone by the way) :grin:

I've seen Rugers Vaqueros for as low as $379, other brands are similarly priced down below retail. Now there's shipping and the FFL fee but that sorta balances the sales tax. I'm betting that the NY tax would be a goodly sum on $400.

In any event find a club/match close to you and attend; this will give you a real good idea of just what CAS is all about. It wil also let you get a feel for the different style of grips and lengths of barrels.

I've got me a brace of AWA Peacekeepers, nice smooth guns right out of the box, and purty to boot. I generally shoot my Remington's but when it gets really hot out here(120+), I switch to BP Cartridge using my AWA's so far they haven't skipped a beat. RR

Been looking at the auction sites , better prices even with shipping and transfer fees then I can get them for around here. Your right about the sales tax , were I am here of Long Island it's 8 1/2 % :x :x !!!
Like the Ruger Vaquero's with the birdshead grip but they only have a 3 3/4 " barrel , is that a diavantage at the rangers that CASS shoot at ?

I was watching one shooter who had one and he didn't do too well. Not sure if it was the gun or the pard. :grin:
I am carrying 5 1/2 ones as my old eyes (56 years) like the longer sight radius.
Would be nice if they made the birds head with 4 3/4 barrels.

Our usual distance is 10 yds plus for the pistol targets.
