I was wondering if any of you could help me decide on a load for deer season. I've been using 17.5gr. of 2400 behind a 210gr. jacketed bullet(nosler jhp, or an xtp) the past week or two. Is that plenty do you think for shots on deer around 75yds. or less? I might up the charge just a bit, but my loading manual says that is max, going a touch over 1400fps. I've just been using that because it works in the 1.3cc lee dipper. If you have any suggestions as to powder charges, it'd be appreciated...I'll just break out the scale. Also if you have any suggestions as to bullets that would be great too, right now I think I'll use the xtp's unless you know of any that work better, or are as easy to get as them. Thanks a bunch.

Cattleskinner, I use a Remington 210gr.sp over a 20grs. of H110, it seems to work for me in my firearm,S&W657. What you have will take down a deer easily, as long as you put the bullet in the heart lung area. Hope this helps, Richard..

You wouldn't happen to have a chronograph at your disposal, would you? I use velocityand of course accuracy, with a particular bullet weight, more than powder amount, of a load? So far, I haven't seen any loads, no matter what powder or bullet weight, in my Smith model 57 that doesn't shoot very well? Some are better than others but, all are what I'd consider accurate enough for hunting? And, I'd have to say the same about the accuracy in my 629-4, .44 mag gun.

Nope, I don't have a chrono, or know of anyone who did. If I did that would make it alot easier on me, but if I go by what the reloading manuals say, and I realize that they probably are not going to be spot on, I should be pretty well set. Thanks guys.

Been using 210 gr XTPs over blue dot or H110 for years. About a 1/2 grain under max gives me the best accuracy. They work great for heart/lung shots. Usually find the bullet just under the hide on the opposite side. Don't think I've shot anything over 35 yards though.

I shot a pretty fair sized doe this morning. I was using a Ruger Redhawk in .41 Mag. My load was Hornady 210 XTP over 18Grs of 2400. It went through both shoulders and she never took a step. Distance was less than 50 yards.

ftw....congratulations on the doe! Should be some fine eating. I ordered a box of the 210gr. gdhp bullets, and just got around to testing them tonight. The recovered bullets look great, and seem to expand like the partition gold bullets, or a little bit more than that. Granted, it was not a very experimental test, as I dug them out of a dirtbank, but it's all I have at my disposal. They shot really well too. I tried out the max load that speer recommends of 19gr. 2400, and a #300 primer. I still need to do a bit more experimenting this month in preparation of the gun season opener on the 28th of Nov., but from what I saw tonight, and the reputation that gold dot bullets have, I think I may have my deer load for the year. Thanks again to everybody that replied.
