I personally think that's ridiculous. My gunsmith does a lot of benchrest work on competition rifles and has always been quite good on my rifles he's worked on. On my newest, a Remington 700BDL in .25-06 I'm doing well to get 1 1/2" (5 at 100yds). This is after shelling out an extra $250. to have the action glass bedded, the barrel floated and the trigger adjusted. If I send it back to Remington they'll probably tell me that's acceptable accuracy. I'm not accepting that. I have too many good Remingtons from the '80s. I have a load of experience with shooting from a bench and load development. If Remington would hire a few more machinists and gunsmiths instead of bean counters we might not be having these problems. Sorry guys, I'm just not a happy camper about this. Best wishes. I never meant to infer that your Gunsmith doesn't know what he's doing, nor that what he does is anything but good work. But you should realize that the only thing that makes a good gunsmith is experience. They all started somewhere and made mistakes along the way.
You also have to realize that alot of people like to tinker with stuff, and guns aren't any different. If some amateur tinkers with a rifle and doesn't like the end result, he/she sells it to a probably unsuspecting buyer, who now has the problem. Who takes the fall for that then? I suspect the Manufacturer may get unflattering reviews for making a rifle that isn't up to the buyers expectations. Only because the previous owner wanted to try his newborn gunsmithing skills.
Liability is a funny thing in todays world. I personally wouldn't think that Remington or any other manufacturer would back a warranty on any firearm that has been altered by anyone but a factory rep. If they get sued, the experts will be looking for the reason. I am sure Remington and the rest have well paid Lawyers on the payroll that look for microscopic alterations to a firearm in wrongful death lawsuits.
One more thing, if you take your new car in for repairs to anyone but a factory certified mechanic and dealer parts aren't used, you have probably just voided the warranty on your car should something major go wrong.
Read the small print.
