New Small Bore Bullet for 2006
« on: October 01, 2005, 01:23:05 PM »
The following is the new Small Bore bullet that Barnes is bringing out in their TSX line in 2006.

Quote
.22 Caliber
.224 62-grain TSX Boattail

This will go along with their 53 gr. Flat Base TSX and their 70 gr. Boattail TSX in .224 caliber.  While I don’t recommend their use on big game the 62 and 70 gr. TSX Boattails may make a good Pronghorn Antelope bullet in cartridges such as the .22-250, .220 Swift and the .223 WSSM.  But to use even these exceptional penetrating bullets I still say that NO .224 centerfire should be used on even the smallest of deer.  Sorry, but I just can’t change the way I feel on this issue.  Lawdog

I like the Nosler ballistic tips for my .22 cal work. I like the explosiveness.  :D

I still think that most guns shoot FB better short range- out to just over 500yds my 6BR likes the Flat base bullets over the boat tails by a good bit. 500- 600 they tend to run neck and neck. Past that the BTs take over. As always- YMMV and just my

I'm curious as to the difference between a 120lb deer and a 120lb antelope?  Not to start anything here, but it seems contradictory to me.

I agree in most part with you, BUT if I were in the woods with a 223 with bullets of proper design, and a perfect shot presented itself (assuming legalities like tags and legal cal is not an issue) I'd take it.

A 3/8" or better hole through lungs and heart will kill ANYTHING quickly.

Sorry, but that is how I feel.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

No offense taken.   :toast:   My fault as I should have explained better.  The difference is where they are hunted.  Pronghorn Antelope are hunted for the most part in wide open country.  You don’t find very many trees(if any) and even brush can be few and far apart.  Not very much to interfere with or get in the path of the bullet.  For example I have seen a 60 gr. Nosler Partition get deflected enough by a small twig that a chest aimed shot on a Coyote at 175 yards, the twig was only a few yards from the Coyote, struck the Coyote in the head.  On even a small deer that shot would have ended up wounding the deer if not missing it completely.  Lawdog

P.S. - The last Antelope I killed earlier this month only weighted about 90 live weight.  I shot him with a 100 gr. TSX out of my .25 WSSM.  LD
