Folding Rifle Stock -- Opinions?

I'm thinking of getting folding stocks for Contender and Encore rifles.  Anybody have any knowledge they'd like to share on the subject?  What's available out there, what works, and where should I go looking for something like this?

I have had a Choate folder for about 15 years now.  I like it when back packing in the high mountains as I have a sleave made out of an old jeans leg for it and can strap it to the side of the backpack for easy transport.  I mostly use it with a .22 Hornet 21" barrel or 21" .223 barrel.  OAL is a little over the legal 26" folded requirement (there is some disagreement about what the requirement is).  The stock is right for use with the iron sights but takes a little "searching" for the stock weld when used with a scope.  Not a real problem when shooting squirrels and such and you get used to it pretty quick.  The stock locks up pretty solid both folded and extended.  A friend of mine has had his longer than I've had mine and he uses it quite extesively and likes it.  worth getting if you can find one.

You've exactly described my intended use (backpacking) for the gun.  Except I was thinking of something more along the lines of caliber 45-70.  

I didn't know about the minimum folded length requirement.  I was gonna search for a 16 inch barrel to put on it.  Do you think T/C could provide me with sound advice on legal combo's for their folding stock?

Nice to hear that they are solid stocks, both folded and unfolded.

I have one of the Choate folding models that I use in conjuction with a Bullberry 18" heavy barrel chambered in .45 Colt. Have a vintage Redfield compact wideview scope mounted on it. Works for me as a backpack carbine for deer hunting, especially for packing in a climbing stand each morning before daylight. The .45 colt case is more efficient than the 45-70, can be loaded up hot or down to subsonic velocities.
Wasn't aware about the 26" folded length rule.

OH YEA, one other piece of advice. I've added a padded cheekrest to the buttstock. Don't remember the brand, but it normally attaches to the folding stock with velcro and has insertable pads to get that just right height to see through the scope and get good stock contact with the stock and your cheek. I attached mine with small wood screws to prevent the pad from moving, which it does with the velcro attachment.

Anybody get an answer from Thompson Center.
Measured mine folded and with a 21" standard Thompson Center factory stock the overall folded length is only 25".

Hey,

I went to a gun show today.  I asked about the folded stock length to two dealers of T/C stuff.  Both didn't know of any regulations regarding minimum folded length.  Furthermore, both have said that they have openly displayed 16 inch carbines with the folded stock, and have not had so much as a second look from ATF agents visiting their tables.

I know this isn't matter-of-fact from a legal perspective.  But hopefully, it will be somewhat more reassuring.

My understanding is that with the stock folded, it would be considered a long-barreled handgun, since it cannot be shoulder-fired. It would have to have a 16" barrel minimum, and 26" minimum total length with the stock extended.

BNoz01:  I have a black Chote folding stock. I've used it with both my  Super 16 .223 Rem Bbl w/scope & Super 16 45/70 Bbl w/iron sights.  It isn't very pretty, but I like the the compactness  ( whole thing will fit in a large gym bag ).  The 45/70 is great shot from the shoulder, but being shot as a handgun is QUITE SEVERE (has a muzzle break-causes gun to    come straight back in your hand ).  You also have to watch finger placement of your bracing hand as the trigger guard spur will BITE.          You can go to www.riflestock.com (Chote Mfg) for more info.         Good luck & good shooting     Ken

I agree whole-heartedly with your comments.  I finally got a folder for my Contender a while back, and really enjoy this thing.  Now, I gotta find one for the Encore and I'll be set.

Ed Kirkpatrick of Ed's Contenders has them.

I have one for my Encore and love it. The strange part is I shoot good groups with it from the bench... I didn't expect that.
