Reduced Centerfire Loads?
« on: October 02, 2005, 12:30:51 PM »
Has anyone ever tried the reduced loads in some of the more popular reloading manuals? I loaded up 20 rounds for my Encore in 22-250. Here is the load that I used from Speer.

12 grains of SR4759 and a 55 Grain FMJBT This should put me at about 1600 FPS.

I haven't shot them yet, I am waiting untill I hear from you guys.

I tried this because there are some animals I would like to shoot and not totally explode them. Also I wanted to see how much quieter it would be. I only loaded 20, if they don't work as planned I will cut my losses.

The only real problem I have found with some reduced loads is at a certain point accuracy starts to go away.  Lawdog

Some have had luck using cast bullets in medium-bore rifles and pistol powders, such as Unique. A 115gr cast out of a .30-06 using Unique gets around 1800fps, and makes about as much noise as a .22 Mag. I'm not sure how much luck you'd have doing that with a .22-250, unless you can run larger bullets out of it. Just a thought...
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

You have every thing against you down loading a 22-250.  You have a little bitty bore with a big go fast case with slow twist rifling for light weight bullets.  You will have trouble with the long heavy bullets shooting them slow because of the twist rate, and there are some very bad things that can happen with large capacity cases with not much powder in them.  If you got the load from a real load book then I would shoot them and see, cooking one up on your own could be surprising.  Larry

When loading down like that never use rifle powders as they have had detination problem with them. If your going to try it use shotgun powders and I would recomand mag. primers to make sure that you have enough fire to find the very small volume of powder in that big case. The 4759 should be fast enough. The only way you`ll know is to try your loads and the 12 gns. sounds abt right.
