aftermarket iron sights for matched pair
« on: October 02, 2005, 04:48:22 PM »
I just purchased a 223/12 ga matched pair.  The workmanship is not fancy but top-notch.  Both barrels function flawlessly.  I would like to change out the rifle sights ( narrow front blade and adjustable for elevation and windage possibly peep rear sight ).  Has anyone had experience swapping sights and which ones fit the existing sight holes and dovetail.

My R357S (357 rifle) came with lamo plastic rear sights good only for windage, no elevation, piece of crapola.  I replaced the rear sight with one from a T/C Contender I bought on eBay for $5, screwed right in to existing holes for scope base.  Williams makes an excellent peep site for the T/C Contender that i'm sure would work.  I haven't found a replacement front sight yet but the Contender rear sight works fine for now with the factory front sight.  Hope that helps.

Hi Ganjiro.  Thanks for the input.  I haven't found a local store that has a williams peep sight yet.  What I did do was purchase a weaver 92A base that says it is for a TC contender.  When I brought it home and tried it on my rifle, the radius on the scope base is for a barrel that is considerably skinnier that the barrel on my rifle.  So I am wondering if a Williams peep for a Contender would have the same problem.  The barrel diameter on my 223 barrel at the breech is approx. 1 3/32 " ( works out to 1.14" - my caliper is not available until the weekend so I couldn't be precise ).  Would you happen to know what the barrel diameter on yours is?

Hi Gemite, looks like your .223 barrel breech matches the 20 gauge action thus the large OD.  My .357 Rifle has a breech that measures a hair over 3/4" and looks to be based on their .410 shotgun frame.  The T/C rear sight fits this barrel like a glove.  This gun weighs 4 lbs. at most, very handy.   I believe the dovetail cut for their rear sight is metric so a tad too big for standard US dovetail sights, may need brass shims sheets underneath to try dovetail sights from old Winchester or Marlin.  Wish the T/C accessories worked for your rifle like they did mine.  :?
