New Guy with questions
« on: October 02, 2005, 07:49:51 PM »
Hi All: I have a Handi synth stock .223 and love it. Shoots great groups with my reloads. I would like to get another barrel for it to use for deer/elk (my son has been bugging me to go with him)and am interested in the 30-30 bbl but they don't show it available with scope rail. My old eyes (55yrs young) just don't work too well anymore with open sights.
Would I be able to special order a 30-30 bbl with scope rail from NEF or would I have to buy the rail separate and have local gunsmith mount it for me?
By the way, great group of people here and I've learned a lot LURKING in the shadows for a while <G>.

Welcome Thomas... :D  :D

Here's a link to the H&R Barrel Accessory site: http://www.hr1871.com/barrelAcc/index.htm

They will happily supply you with a 30/30 barrel for 82.00 + 15.00 fitting + 10.00 shipping. And sometimes there are barrels sold through the classifieds here on the forum.

NEF also sell scope mounts that fit the holes in the 30/30 barrels that are already drilled and tapped for scope mounts. You will likely need the offset hammer spur as well and most of us use high or medium rings to keep the scope's objective from interfering with hammer fall.

Read the stickies at the top of the page for bunches of info on Handis, and use the search feature to find specific info you want.

Glad to see you out of the shadows. This is a great place with great folks, and great resources.

Cheers
Kerry

Kerry: Thanks for the reply. If the 30-30 bbl comes already tapped for the scope rail then I'm good to go.
Thanks again

Yes you are GTG.  You could also fit your new barrel with a Williams peep sight that mounts to the 2 rearmost scope rail mounting holes.  It's available from NEF or Midway carries them too for a few less $$.  I think it's the williams WGRS.  You may need to replace the front blade also.

Cm3...
Does that rear peep sight work with stock front sights ?
I have a pristine .44 mag Shikari model that I would like to do that with, but have been wondering if it would line up so I could use the original front sight...

I don't know.  I can measure the height above the bore's centerline this evening when I get home but just off the top of my head I'm guessing that the wgrs will be higher than your factory rear sight, it must be since it starts out over the chamber and is about 1/4 inch above the outside of the chamber wall at it's lowest setting.

Does your front sight have a blade that will drift out?

Yes, the front sight blade is just a plain blade with square corners, like the NEF slug guns...except the barrel on the .44 mag is thick enough to have a regular dovetail cross groove.

I have been thinking about fabricating a rear "ghost" sight...
