1st Moose !!!
« on: October 03, 2005, 04:31:40 PM »
Took this fine specimen on the last day of a week long hunt.  Moose are plentiful in this area until you acquire a permit, then they go into hiding.    Very tough week.  Young bull was taken with a T/C Encore with a .308 Custom Shop Barrel at a distance of 180 yards using a Stoney Point PoleCat.  Two rounds behind the shoulder three inches apart.  The bull weighed in at 638 lbs with a 32" rack, about average -- at this point in the hunt I would have taken a 200 lbs. unicorn  :) Hope the link below works.  Thanks.

Way to go.  Well, if a .308 Winchester round out of a handgun can take down a 600+ LB moose then I guess my '06 should be up to the task.  However, we seem to have a more or less permanent shortage of meese here in Modesto, Ca!!

Congradulations and consider yourself as part of an elite group. Most moose are shot with rifles in northern New England.A few with the bow and muzzleloader, but very few with a handgun. You will have some excellent eating there.

A little more information ...

The moose was shot in an open field, however we had called the night prior in the surrounding woodline with no results.  It was obvious by the signs that this was the place to be ..... the next morning we again parked on the edge of the field, we waited until a few minutes prior to legal shooting (0602) and started walking to the woodline.  A few steps from the truck and realized that I forgot my shooting stick.  While I retrieved it, my friend noticed a cow and a bull along the woodline 250 yds. away.  We moaned for the bull with no results, after a few moments, we grunted for the cow, they immediately closed in to 200 yds.  The bull wanted her and she wanted us ... we continued to grunt, and the bull presented himself at 200yds headon ... I fired and missed   My friend continued to call as we approached them huddled together, with the instructions to stop when I felt comfortable.  As we closed in twenty yards, the bull turned broadside at 180 yds. and the rest is history... thanks for allowing me to share the experience.

Excellent photo and great story.  Impressive shooting too.  You'll be able to relive this hunt for a long time.
