Would you buy a Savage/Stevens chambered in 7.62x39?
« on: October 03, 2005, 05:52:49 PM »
I am happy there are a few manufacturers chambering new rifles in our beloved SKS and AK round.
I for one would love to see a new Savage or especially a Stevens 200 chambered for the 7.62x39.
What do you guys think?

I have always been interested in a bolt action in this caliber. Surplus ammo is cheap, however I have been hearing of problems with missfires caused buy primers being set in deep in the surplus ammo.

True, the single shot rifles like H&R's and Rossi's don't like surplus or even Wolf/Bear ammo. The hammer strike isn't enough with the primers so deep and hard.
However I don't think it's as bad a problem with a bolt action.

Would i ? ............................No.
No matter the cal. I`m at the ," enough is enough" stage.  That is unless i can find a Sav 99 in .358.  Then i`ll have to re-think .

Yes - I would definately be interested in a bolt action Savage in 7.62x39.
I reload and with the proper bullet it would make a nice, easy shooting
deer rifle round (within about 125yds). As I get older (mid 50's now) I find that I am becoming more AWARE of heavy recoil. Won't shoot the 300winmag anymore - but love my Savage mod. 111 in .270 with 150gr
Remington Core-Lokt bullets - puts em dead-center-bull at 100 yds.
A bolt action 7.62x39 would also make a nice varmit round ( been know to shoot a few with my Russian SKS <G>).
Just my 2cents worth

I think so too. The 7.62x39 is a nice little round. Varmint and deer size game would be ideal. And your right the recoil is so minimal, it's very plesent to shoot as much as you like, and no shooters shoulder.
Don't get me wrong I love the heavy stuff, but to me the smaller cartridges are just way too fun.
Just think, a Stevens chambered in the 7.62x39, with 22" barrel,
and a 3-9x40 or possibily a 4-12x44 Mil-Dot scope...500 cheap plinking rounds.....40 or so precise handloads....ummmm, deer, coyotes, groundhogs, etc.. what a killer little set up.
I would order one today if it was true.

I've been playing around with small case cartridges in my software. The goal is an efficient cartridge with little recoil or muzzle blast in a short barrel woods gun. A 7.62x39 would do more than you might think assuming the magazine is long enough for a longer OAL. Start with a high BC bullet that opens up well at low velocities, like a 150 gr Scirocco loaded to an OAL of 2.40". In a 22" barrel you should get 2350 fps, which means 1060 lb. energy and 1800 FPS at 300 yds, a velocity that's plenty for double caliber mushrooms with the Scirocco. The 7.62x39 already has a longer neck than the 300 Savage, which shoots much heavier bullets than this accurately. The only problem would be bullet drop beyond 250 yds but that's plenty for most shooting. Sighted 3" high at 120 yds, it would be 3" low at 245, but 10" low at 300.

I think I'm going to go with a shortened .308, maybe the 30BR with a 2.5" OAL. It should give me 2500 FPS easily, and that helps alot with the trajectory. Recoil? What recoil?

Why wouldn't the 30/30 have fit this bill? The case neck is much longer, lending itself well to cast bullet shooting. A shooter can expand into premium boat tails if he chooses to. The Savage 340 is a fine example of what the 30/30 can do in a bolt gun.

Some shops still have .260 Savage barrels on hand. The perfect solution for an older hunter with a dislike for heavy recoil. And you can sell all the rest of your rifle, this chambering does it all.  :D

I think that would be great. A lightweight bolt action with 20" or 22" barrel. Sorta bolt action version of the Ruger Mini-30.

I could see getting one in the basic Stevens trim.  I use the cheap wolf stuff in my SKS, but I think it would be interesting to try reloading for a bolt gun, especially if they made it in .308 diameter rather than .310.  That makes a lot of interesting bullet options available to use.  Not to mention, Remington just stopped importing their 798/799 line of rifles, so there might be a bit of a market for the 7.62 chambering.

  No.

  Reasons?

Didn't Interarms use to sell the Mini-Mauser in this caliber?  If so, then why do we need a new one made by Savage?  Go to a big gun show and find one.

Remington now owns the distribution rights for the Mini-Mauser, and is selling them brand new.  If they make one in 7.62 Russian, then why do we need a new one from Savage?

Also, I know that you can buy a synthetic stock for the Mini-Mauser.  I just saw it in the new Midway catalogue.

   Enough is enough.

  Just my thoughts.

Oops, I didn't see the post advising that Remington is no longer importing the Mini-Mauser from Zavasta.  No matter, Interarms and Charles Daly imported them for years, so there are plenty around.  And, someone new will pick up the distribution rights in the next couple of months.

Would I buy a bolt action rifle in 7.62x39? yes as a matter of fact I have a Mil-surp bolt rifle converted to it
years past when ther was a outfit doing that for $120 for Mausers and Carcano's.
I have seen Russian bolt sporting rifles on the Russian American Armory site but havent seen one in the flesh yet.
Canada imports Norinco bolt rifles in that caliber.

Wow, a 4 year thread brought back! Well to say the least I still stick to my original opinion of sorts. If not Savage then another. I know of CZ's and the Mini Mauser Remington imported, still a little pricy from what I have seen. The idea of a Stevens sounds good on paper, though I would see it actually passing into reality non existent. I am curious to see who picks up the rights to those Mausers from overseas....
