Personally, I would go with the 25-06. JMHO  :D

Similar recoil to a .270 in similar rifle weights.  Barrel life depends on how it is used - one of mine has over 850 rounds through it and has shown no drop off in velocity or accuracy - I'd be dissappointed if I got less than 1500 shots with careful use.  Just don't overheat the throat by firing rapidly, and let it cool between shots and groups.  This does more to shorten barrel life than about anything else.  You have to pay for that high perfermance some way, and being restricted to slow fire is not a bad price.

The largest would be the .257 STW in a custom barrel for your Encore.  Next would be the .257 Weatherby but for all around hunting use the .25-06 or .257 Roberts would be a better choice.  Cost less for ammo and factory ammo is readily available and costs less too.  Seeing I really like both the .257 Roberts and the .25-06 Rem. as both will give excellent accuracy I would say I would go with the .25-06.  Just a bit more versatile than the .257 Roberts.  Lawdog

If you load your own I would resomand the .257AI. It will give you the same velosities as the .25-06 with alittle less powder but the case tends to be alittle more accurate. I`m pushing an 87 gn. bullet at 3,500 fps. with mine.
