Range Test .25-06 Ultra
« on: October 05, 2005, 02:34:07 AM »
Near prefect conditions all weekend.  As mentioned in an earlier post I have done a few modifications to my Ultra.  Nothing that the average tinkerer couldn't do.  Modifications include:

1.Tubb Final Finish Kit
2.Bed forearm to barrel with as little stress as possible
3.Trigger job
4.Bed scope mount to barrel
5.Remove screws from plastic retainer piece on forearm and let it float (set it in place with forearm off and then install forearm, it cannot fall out after forearm is installed) This is to relieve any remaining pressure that may be in the system. It may be nessisary to take a little material off of this piece in order to float it.  Don't take off too much, just enough to remove any pressure points.
6.In my rifle, I loaded 100 gn Ballistic Tips .010 off of the lands, which made an awfully long loaded round that shouldn't be fired in any other gun. The chamber is very long.

The results were very interesting.  With a clean barrel, it took four shots for the grouping to settle in (burning oil out).  The rifle seems like it wants to shoot into one hole.   EVERYTHING IS UNDER 1/2"! The first group measured approximately .330 the next measured .430.  The rifle will shoot alot better than I can hold it.

I did put the sandbags under the receiver and not the forearm.
Plans are in the works to do a .243 bull barrel.

More tests will follow............

Nice shooting Big E:

Mines getting about the same with factory Winchester Supreme 115gr Silver BT's..The factory did my trigger job when I sent it in for another 25-06 barrel...and it was lapped by hand with Flitz....and 2 very small o-rings added...haven't got around to bedding the action or barrel yet,but will after deer season. It actually shoots better than my other 25-06 before I had rechambered and rebored to 338-06...I have some of the CT 115 gr. bullets to load...as well as some 110 gr. Accubonds.hopefully I can get it all done before deer season...but if I can't I'm ready as it is...

How do you plan on off-hand shooting?

It's against the law to shoot offhand in Alabama, we only shoot off of sandbags or mechanical rests...............Sorry I couldn't resist.  I don't think my technique for shooting groups to test accuracy will affect the outcome of an offhand hunting situation.

These were just some things I did, and some opinions I had that I don't mind sharing for the benefit of all.  Still at worst,  the groups I would get offhanded, if I chose to test for accuracy in that way, would be better that an out of the box rifle could produce.  This is my opinion.

oy im bad at picking them up. But my true point to the Q was how would one shoot off hand with that fore-end setup with out really throwing accuracy because of the new influence of the human hand. He already answered it but i had to get my Q across.

WOW!! is all I can say.

It sounds to me like you have yourself one of the most accurate 25-06 Handi's out there!

If you want to try a new load for varmints perhaps....I will recommend you the Hornady 75g V-Max bullet ontop of either 56.5 grains of IMR 4350 or 51 grains of IMR 4064 using a CCI 200 primer.

Both of them gave me sub-MOA accuracy with the second load being the best at under 5/8" groups from my choate stocked '06. Velocity should be close to 3575fps for the 4350 load and 3800+fps for the 4064 load.

Good luck to your future testing and have fun doing so!

Hildy, I have some 75gn V-max's, and my favorite load is 59 gns of Reloader 19 with a WLR primer.  It is quite possibly the most accurate load that I have fired out of several rifles.  The problem is that if I loaded the V-max as long as I could it would still be about 1/4" from the lands.  I haven't tried it yet in the Ultra due to this.   It might shoot fine, who knows.  Most of my loads are using the Reloader series of powders.  I like the load densities and velocity that I get from them.  They seem like they were made just for the .25-06.  Been using them for several years now.

Wow, the 25-06s are showing outstanding accuracy! :D

BigE:  Out of curiosity, how much barrel cooling time are you allowing between shots and between groups when shooting these tiny groups??

Mainer, both of those groups were shot back to back with minimal cooling time,  maybe a minute or so.  The barrel was still pretty warm.  I felt of it between groups and thought that it was pretty warm but I wanted to see if anything was going to change so I went ahead and shot the next group. To my suprise nothing changed that I could see.

I hope to post some pics after the next session.  My plans are to fire several groups and see if barrel heating will open the groups up. Maybe 4 or 5 groups back to back.
