Best advice is to get a reloading manual , one that has different bullet manufacture's and different powders makers and use trapdoor numbers.  A little hint is that my 45/70(SSK 14") loves IMR 3031 with 300 and 350gr bullets. Also crimp your loads for better powder burn in short barrels.

IMR 4198, a safe load in a contender is 39gr. I used that in mine and it shot well. But you will still need to sight in your gun with them.  :D

IMR 4198 shoots good in mine with that bullet.  I use 36 grs., much above that and the enjoyment goes away for me.

I really like the IMR 3031 loads as I mentioned earlier. I think you'll like them also. Using Hornady 350gr RN it'll shoot a ragged hole at 50yds and under 1" at 100yd. It doesn't tear deer up as bad as the 300gr HP's of various makes but still puts the smack on em'. Your from Uniontown, I grew up near Marianna(off of I-79) and was back there yesterday. From our farm which is one of the highest around I can see the cross on top of the mountains and the headlights at night as the cars cross over the top of Rt. 40. We played Uniontown in high school (Trinity 78) and I also spent the summers at Camp Carmel on the "Yough" between Connellsville and Ohio Pyle. Love that area.
