« on: October 05, 2005, 01:06:25 PM »
Looking for a cleaning set up to hold a handi. Right now I am either clamping the barrel in a vice std steel bench mounted vise not gun vise(rubber lips on it) or laying it on the bench with the stock hanging off & down(dangerous position may fall don't do it any more)

So what are you using/?? any of the comercial cleanig boxs or gun vices
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

I take the barrel off and clamp the lug in a bench vice with heavy leather pads on the jaws , This works real well to polish chambers also .  :-)

That's easy...

Works great for me...I added lead shot to the built in compartments on the bottom side...it doesn't move...and works great for sighting in too...

I went to Harbor freight tools and picked up their version of the sears workmate for 10 bucks and put two 2' sections of 3/4" pipe insulation on each side of the wook and clamp the rifle in the middle. Very stable and soft on the gun.  Folds up and into the closet when not at work.  can't beat it!

Thanks lesgeaux!
That's a great idea.  I never thought of doing that.  I have a workmate that hasn't seen action in years...just hangin' from a hook in the garage.  That's just the idea I have been lookin' for.  I don't have heat in the garage and I live in a split entry home.  The basement isn't really a basement, its part of the house, you know, family room with couches and chairs and stuff.  Makes it kinda hard to put in a workshop.  Using the workmate will give me portable, foldable space that can be hidden away when not in use.  Thanks for the idea.

I use the Tipton or Winchester made by Tipton, both are the same, but the Winchester can be had for about $10 less. It holds a Handi with the barrel in the open position for cleaning.

Quickdoo,
Apparently, I am kind of dense.  Or having a senior moment.   How do you position an open Handi in your gun rest?
That is the type I own for my bolt guns.

thanks,
pepaw

I have one and what you'd do is open the rifle and clamp it in the vise in the open position.

I prefer to lay the open rifle over my dog-gone-good rest and position a trash barrel under the muzzle.  gravity does the work of holding the gun open and disposing of the used patches.

Easy.... open the action, place the butt in the clamp and tighten with the butt as low as it will go, the middle support will prevent the action from closing with the barrel in the forend cradle. I usually can position it just right so the ejector stays in so it doesn't grab my patches and I use the Kleenbore muzzle protector in the chamber to center the rod. Tipton makes a better suited Handi cleaning station but it costs twice as much!!
