LORIS - Three residents petitioned City Council at Monday's meeting to consider an ordinance that would ask heads of households and business owners to be armed in an attempt to reduce crime.
Neal and Melissa Seaman cited a similar ordinance adopted in 1982 in Kennesaw, Ga., an Atlanta suburb, in their petitions.
"The only thing the ordinance does is send a message to the bad guys saying that criminal behavior is not tolerated here - [that] citizens are armed and ready to protect themselves, their families and their homes," Neal Seaman said during his presentation.
Michael Nirenstein, a Loris chiropractor, also asked the council to consider the ordinance, which he thought could help make Loris safer.
"We need to be more proactive and let criminals know we won't tolerate this," Nirenstein said.
He gave the council a letter detailing an incident he had with a man demanding money outside a Loris car wash.
All three said the proposal for the ordinance came after Seaman and Nirenstein noticed problems with robberies, burglaries and drugs in the area.
Mayor David Stoudenmire advised City Council to read the packet provided by the Seamans and "digest the information for future discussion."
