Bushy open sites for Varmints
« on: October 06, 2005, 09:42:28 AM »
What open sites are the best for varmint hunting with the Bushmaster in .223?  This is mostly for coyotes, but also for other critters.

Id like to be as accurate as possible, but I dont want to go to other more breakable options.  Im a clutz.

What size post/app?   Im thinking of the glow-in-the-dark 3 dot sight for night/lowlight.

Thanks

KB I know you wanted open sites, but have you considered a red dot scope. It's easier to line up a little dot on a critter and fire, than to put the front post in between the 2 back posts and then get the elevation right. All of them I've ever ran across use a 3.5 volt lithium battery, kind of like a nickel sized watch battery. I have one scope from when I first found one of these things, maybe 1994 and the battery still hasn't been changed.  My hunting rifles and pistols get treated a tad rough and they hold up well. The weapons issued by my department carry the dot scopes as well. Some of the guys abuse their firearms worse than I do my hunting arms and the scopes have held up fine.
Good Luck

I've knocked my scope off zero so many times with out even knowing it, that I don't really trust them anymore.

I know that it may sound silly, but last season I shot a buck that suffered badly due to a bad zero.  I over tighten some of my mounts to the point of breaking the screws, so that's not it.

I thought of a red dot, but don't have any experience with them.  Im new to the Bushmaster scene, but have much experience with hunting and firearms.

What are the types that you are familiar with?
