NEED HELP!
« on: October 06, 2005, 11:58:56 AM »
Hey folks,
My friend at work bought a Savage Bolt Action in .270 last year from another guy at work.  He never knew how to get the bolt out until I told him what I knew the procedure to be (i.e. open bolt, press bolt release, pull trigger.)  He got it out just fine, slick as ice.  BUT he made 1 mistake, he couldnt resist the urge to fiddle around.  It seems he did something to the cocking piece pin on the back of the bolt.  He pushed it in, and cant remeber what position it was in before he fiddeled with it (currently it is in the farthest forward position.)  Of course, when he tried putting the bolt back in that piece is now blocking the bolt from going in.  His next mistake was to try to force the piece back (with channel locks of all things   !) but was smart enough to stop before he did any real damage.
so..........I come loking for help in fixing the problem.  What position is the cocking piece pin supposed to be in (i.e. rear, rear bottom or what) and how do we get it back into that position?  Ir is it something more obvious we are missing here.  If it matters any the firing pin is protruding from the bolt face and is locked there.....it aint moving, so if that helps you diagnose?

a black button looking thing on the underside of the bolt. it needs to be in the notch you see there. its spring loaded so get a screwdriver and push it bakc there, it will stay on its own. dont stab yourself while doing this, it takes a lot of effort.

it sounds like he uncocked it while it was out of the rifle. i did this and had to come on here to find out how to fix it as well. lol

once you get it back into the notch it is cocked again and the lugs will line up and you can put it back in the gun.

Thanks mjbgalt!
We chucked the bolt in a vise between 2 pieces of 2x4.  He pulled buck on the pin with a screwdriver and I pushed it down with another.  1 minutes effort, a life lesson learned  .
