41 special conversion?
« on: October 06, 2005, 07:35:20 PM »
I like the new smith L frames with the lighter barrels without the heavy underlug, but it still seems like  a very heavy gun for the size of the ctg.

I know they made a 5 shot L frame in .44 special for a while, but that item is no longer listed.

Does anyone know if you can convert an L frame to .41 Magnum or to .41 special?  The 41 special is a wildcat, but it's a great load.

Taurus made .44 cal snubs, but you can't get them in California anymore and you can't get very much in the way of aftermarket grips/accessories either.  With Smith, you can get a ton of grips, etc.

I like  a  .44 spcecial snub nose but nobody really makes a nice one.  Ruger makes a super redhawk in .45 colt/454 casul, but it's not really what I had in mind.    An L frame in .41 with a 2-3 inch barred would be perfect.  Does anyone know if this conversion can be or has been done my anyone?

Clements did mine on a 3in 686. I am very happy with it.

There have been K-frame sized 44spls, so an L-frame should certainly be able to be converted to .41spl.

I think the 41 special is a great idea in the right size gun.
Could never see why anyone would ever get a S&W N frame in 41 when you can get one in 44 or 45.
What I would like, is to convert a COLT OFFICAL POLICE to 41 special.
Does anyone know where to get a barrel liner in 41cal. or know who would recut my barrel to 41cal. (cheap)!

Willy,

The difficult part will be (cheep)  :o   That kind of custom work and cheep are not usually found in the same sentence....

How much could it be for a barrel liner and reaming the chambers out?

Reboring and rerifling a barrel was about $200.00, the last time I priced it. Add about $150.00 or so to rechamber the cylinder, then the gun should be retimed, and there'll be refinishing involved for a blued gun. Also, "cheap" and "good" are often mutually exclusive terms.
