The Savage Arms Company dropped chambering .300Savage about 1971. Remaining calibers were limited to .243 and .308.

Excellent round and should have been the Military round starting in 1940 into the 50's prior to the 308 it was light,accurate and had excellent ballistics.

Are you implying that my government wasted millions of dollars to develop and test a round instead of using existing technology?
I really find it hard to believe they would be so foolish! :-D

Actually, the U.S. Government tested the .300 Savage cartridge and, from the information I've read, they were ready to approve it's adoption as the standard U.S. cartridge to replace the .30/06 when they decided to "improve" it.

The "improvement" became known as the 7.62 NATO round aka the Winchester .308 cartridge.

Thus, you might say our Government used "existing technology"... sorta.... in a "left-handed" way... kinda. :-D
