The Double C ranch near Crystal city Texas
« on: October 08, 2005, 06:20:48 AM »
Hello Everyone,

I have won a hunt to this ranch on Ebay. Does anyone have any commentary on this place, or the local area?

The hunt is for an Aoudad ram and a couple of hogs each. Does anyone have any stories or experiences with Aoudads? What constitutes a trophy in an Aoudad? Are they as difficult and wary as I've seen on OLN?

   Thanks, Rvtrav

Hi RV,

Congrats!  Aoudad is a great exotic to hunt.  I went to TX twice and passed on them because I'm waiting for a much over 30" animal.  30" is the holy grail for aoudad.  They are really hard to judge though because their horns sweep back and not up like a mouflon.  They also have 10x vision I'm told and are really spooky.  I'll be going to Indian Head Ranch next year to hunt them (along with javelina and who knows what else).

I expect you'll need flat shooting rifle and a well constructed bullet.

Best of luck!

Doug

Thanks for the info DrDoug, The info is really appreciated.

And my apologies to everyone, I don't know how I doubled down on the same post. Computers are a curious animal sometimes.

Are Aoudads about the same size as most sheep? are they any good to eat? even the rams?

Hi RV,

Aoudads are generally larger than most exotic sheep and can go 200lbs though I've never seen one actually weighed.  I expect a mature ram can be close though.

The russian was from Old Stone Fence in NY. Went 318 gutted (the butcher and his guys had a friendly wager as to who could guess the weight).  The butcher won.....some of the other hunters said 400 or 450...nope....the butcher said not more than 325 and 360 live weight and he was right (as verified by his scales)!

Here's the link: http://www.oldstonefence.com/

I was really there for red stag but happened to see that boar and a nice fallow so I took all three.  No real story or chases and charges...a 45/70 pretty much ends most arguments!!!!

Good hunting!

Doug

RV

I just hunted the Double C for Red Stag. Los of fun. I really enjoyed it. I think the stag checked the net and knew I was coming. Only one stood still and I nailed him with my .375JDJ Contender at 60 yds. Lots of stuff to see and shoot. I saw a few small Aoudad while pig hunting. Lots of deer too. You'll have a good time.

Dave

Thanks much for the report NRA dave!
I've been anxiously awaiting my vacation to Double C and you make it sound really good, now I'm primed.

How nice was the Red Stag that you got? better yet, do you have any pics? I've been interested in trying for one, the big ones look really cool.

  Thanks again, Rvtrav

Just one other question Dave,

What was the pig hunting like there? This hunt does include hunting pigs as well. Are they primarily spot and stalk, or from blinds, I really want to take a handgun for the hog hunting, Do you think that that is feasible? Or are they pretty wild?

  Thanks again, Rvtrav
