Rainy day groundhog
« on: October 08, 2005, 01:05:52 PM »
It's raining in Pennsylvania now. We are having a big storm passing over. Temperature's are down in the 50's for a change. Leaves are falling, trees are going barren. Fall time is kicking in.

However, even though it's been nasty outside, a whistlepig decided it would be a good idea to sit up on a bank by my house, RIGHT next to a window in my house, while I was by that window. I was looking up varmint hunting on the computer actually when I thought to myself how much I would love to be outside shooting groundhogs. Thinking to myself that this would be near impossible at the time, I happened to glance out that window and see him. All tucked up on that bank, providing me a perfect shot.

I said a few inappropriate words and flew outta the computer chair straight to the gun cabinet. Grabbed a reload and ran out the door. Using the corner of my house as a rest, I adjusted the 18 power scope down and got ready. As I pulled the trigger, the bark of the gun jumped me off target. I looked and saw the hog landing back to earth and rolling down the bank into a little cut-out. The 75 grain V-Max, scorching out of the muzzle at 3800fps, struck the groundhog in the lower abdominal area, throwing internals and opening him up pretty viciously. My heart was still pounding as I walked up to the scene in the cold rain, seeing the target laying there in the leaves.

Anyways, I was pretty suprised to see a groundhog out in the cold rain this late in the year....especially when I was just thinking about how much I'd like to be out hunting them.

yeah i know the feeling, i had a suicidal one 2 weeks ago at the range. i shoot at this little range out in the sticks and if i am alone i sometimes take a whack at varmints that wander onto the premises.

this time i shot a 3 shot group with my .243 and turned around to put it back in the rack when 25 feet behind me here comes the stupidest groundhog ever, munching grass.

bad move.

it hid in bushes when it saw me looking at it so i jumped behind the bench and waited. stupid thing came back out and i made a rather gross mess of him with the 75 grain hollowpoint i was sighting in for coyotes.

glad to hear someone else gets "buck fever" on other things than deer. i'm telling you, that rush is a wonderful thing and to be that close to nature makes me feel 10 feet tall every time, whether i take the shot or not.

I have it on good authority that the telepromter is writing a stern letter.

I wish we had more of them. All we have is are armadillo's. My freind went coyote calling late afternoon in a hay field . He didnt call any coyotes up so he walk around the field looking for sign . He killed 9 armadillo's that day and went back the next afternoon. And killed 7 more of them. We have alot of them But not very many ground hogs. VM :D

I would think that now is a very good time to catch groundhogs out in the open.  As the cooler weather is coming they are most likely to be out trying to eat as much as they can to fatten up for their winter snooze.  Plus how enjoyable would it be to be sitting in a field on a nice fall day.
