HOW DO I GROW FISHING WORMS?
« Reply #2 on: December 08, 2005, 02:26:01 AM »
I have been thinking of doing this too.  I always save my left over minnows in the past and i set up a tank in the garage to put them in rather than dumping them in the pond.  I get to expand my cash flow by not buying so many at $5 a dozen it gets expensive.  I get a few free trips by doing it.  I always wanted to raise worms too.  I know we can get worms by the 1,000's to start and those night crawlers and trout worms seems to be the way to go. A little bait shop would be nice too?

Hey guys I hope you're still interested in this topic, I just started looking this far down the list of topics. I've been stopping at the Handi rifle stuff.

Coopershooter, I live in Fla too, over near Tampa. There several places that raise worms around here. Most of them do it as a by product of raising rabbits. If you look into raising rabbits you'll see people trying to sell you the stuff for converting yourself into a rabbit and worm production unit. the ones I've seen set the rabbit cages over the area where the worms will be raised so you don't have to handle the "worm food."

HI RUSTY!
I LIVE IN HOMOSASSA, CLOSE TO CRYTSTAL RIVER, WEEKI WACHI, CHAZ AND A FEW OTHER NICE BOATING RIVERS.
I GOT INTO SIGHT CASTING FOR BASS WHEN WE MOVED HERE FROM ST.PETE, TWO YEARS AGO.
IT'S FUN BUT NOT ALWAYS EASY!

Bobby,
I come up to Crystal River via work from time to time. I deliver groceries to Save A Lot grocery stores all around the state.

Have you ever tried fly fishing for those bass?

I've had a fly rod for about three years now and I have to say it's about as much fun as a body can have with their clothes on.

HI RUSTY!
I HAVE A NICE FLY ROD, AND I'M OK AT CASTING IT IN THE BACK YARD, BUT I'M NOT REAL GOOD IN THE WATER. I WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT. I ALSO GO SNORKLING ALOT AND I FOUND SOME OF THE BIGGEST BRIM IV,E EVER SEEN, IN THE WEEKI WACHI RIVER. I HAVN'T FISHED FOR THEM YET, BUT THEY MIGHT BE GOOD TO PRACTICE ON WITH THE FLY ROD. I HAVE A SMALL BOAT, IF YOU EVER WANT TO GO FLY FISHING LET ME KNOW!

Bobby,
Try looking at flyanglersonline.com. they are a nice fly fishing web site. On it they have a general section as well as separate sections for Warm water and salt water. As a mater of fact they're having a fish in down in Venice that starts... I think this Thursday.

I know this is old but I see both of you guys are down in Fla. I am going to Fla one Jun8-15 and I am going to go fishing at Lake O and a few other places. Can you give me any suggestions for down there, I have heard shiners work best? I have always used Night Crawlers up here in SC. Also I was planning on using Roland Martins place and renting a boat or bring my Bass boat. How deep is the lake now? I here its very low and do you think the fishing will be good. Any other Suggestions will be appreciated.

I'm not sure about the Big Lake. I've only been down there one time about 20 years ago. I know there are issues with the water level being VERY low. I think I've heard that it's lower now than it has ever been before. I live about 2 1/2 hours north of the Big Lake. If you're going to go out of Roland's Jolly Roger Marina they should be pretty free with all the information you'll want. I drive a truck and drive right by it there in Clewiston about once a month or so. Places like that want you to be satisfied. You might want to check out www.myfwc.com which is the site of the state game commission. There is a lot of valuable information there. The best bet is to hire a guide. Personally I do that when ever I can when fishing new water like that. It makes for a much more memorable vacation. I know there's one guide down there that advertises bass fishing and hog hunting, but I've never used him myself. IIRC it's Ron's guide service.
There are also other lakes north of the big lake that hold a lot of fish as well.

I'm not much of a shiner fisherman. I like to cover more water a lot quicker than what shiners allow. If I'm not fly fishing I'll usually use spinners or jerk baits in that order.

   I hope that helps

    Happy Trails and God Bless,

Thanks Rusty. I might do the guide route but I might now. They say the water is low and they are only renting jon boats so thats what Ill use. There is a few other places I am going to go fishing and right around were I am staying there is public land with hogs. I might go hunt some too. I have done that before so I have got that covered.

Thanks Rick
