I need a new Hammer Spring or two. Some time ago, I think it was Handirifle said there is a 15% stronger spring made by Wolff Springs?

I inquired about it by e-mail but have not heard back. Do they sell them to individuals? Does anybody have one.

My spring is relaxed enough that it takes two three hammer blows to set off the primer.

I tested the firing pin spring with my trigger scale and found it takes 45oz to push it in. The cross pin in hole had some burrs and the seat hole pretty rough.

Cleaned out the burrs and polished the seat hole, cut one coil off the pin spring which reduced the resistance to 20oz. I bent the hammer spring back a bit for more tension.

Fired 10 rounds ok but then it started to misfire again, and the dimple on the primer got shallow again requireing two blows to fire. Indicating a weak spring.

I am going to retemper the spring see if that helps. Like old timers get it cherry hot and drop in vegy oil. It may get to hard and break. But there is nothing to loose. The spring has about 400 cycles.

Brownell's sells a double spring by Wolff for the Topper which they indicate won't work on late model frames, but may be able to be modified to fit.

This is a totally different shape. It could be cut in two and reshaped a bit.

But that is not to say it will work. Brownell sells the regular spring, just buy a 1/2 doz and replace them when they go asleep.

Looks like no hunting for this baby. This rifle is determent to stay home.

I'm wondering if you just got a bad (for whatever reason) spring.

If it's gone bad after only 400 cycles it's defective; maybe NEF will send you a new one on their dime?

Ought to be worth a phone call.

Good idea. I did write them about something before. They wont send anything out to Canada. They got some service dealer in Canada I might get one from them.

But I will give them another try.

They spring is toast now tried to retemper it and it broke in two. I thought that would happen but nothing is lost. You need a furnace with the exact even temperture.

Just got word back from H&R they are sending a spring in the mail.

Brownell only has the douple torsion springs and they wont work.

Good old customer service thank you.

Got an e-mail back from Brownell saying they don't stock them.

Talked to Wolff springs they say they only make the hammer springs for the Topper. From what I can tell the Topper uses the same spring as all the other Handi's. Dave ask me to find out, he got the Topper springs.

According to the Brownell catalog the numbers are the same.

Anyway I get one coming from H&R, would be nice to have a spare.
If you order some send me a couple for spares. Put in a new spring before you go hunting to make sure you got fire in the hole.

It is sure up setting when the gun goes click, and it is loud it sure spook a deer.

fred&tim that double spring in the pic on brownells is the same hammer spring as the model 155 shikari youse's.

Got a new spring from H&R today, and two more are on the way.
Put the gun back together and tried a few primers. I could tell when I put the new spring in that it was much stronger then the old one.

The primer dimple is a lot deeper than the old spring, with the enhancement of the firing pin impediment, the fire in the hole is positive now. God, these misfires were driving me nuts. The soft hammmer fall would also give eratic ignition. Perhaps now after I repristinated the rifle I can get it to shoot halve decent again.
