300 h&h and 300 Nitro express are they the same caliber?

Never heard of the .300 Nitro Express. Doesn't mean there weren't one, but many of the old British Express rounds were simply the old blackpowder cases loaded up with the newfangled cordite powder. The .300 H&H is actually the .375 H&H case, which came out almost ten years earlier, necked down. Only other name I have heard it go under is the Souper 30.

I guess where i saw it was under the Westley Richards web under the ammo part. they listed a 300 anmd 375 Nitro express and I thought many is was the same a H&H. The look close but who knows?

Ballistics are the same, not sure of the case dimensions. Barnes doesn't list a 300 Nitro Express.

I suspect what WR is showing is the rimmed version of the 300 H&H. When H&H introduced the "Super 30", they offered the belted rimless design AND a rimmed design just for double rifle and singleshots. They did the same for the 375.

After looking at the link, I would venture a guess that they are the same.
It just may be that Westley Richards has an aversion to using certain competitor's names. I think they and Rigby also, had their own names for "Mauser" cartridges.

I believe the "rimmed" was called the 300 Flanged Nitro Express.

In Europe the .300 H&H & .375 H&H are known as the .300 Belted Magnum Nitro-Express & .375 Belted Magnum Nitro-Express. Lawdog

Hi All,

Express cartridges used lighter bullets than normal for that calibre originally then the name got mis-used as a salesmans gimmic. Sound familar anyone?

The 9.5x57 mauser is actually a Westley richards .375 Rimless Nitro Express (RNE) and not a Mauser cartridge at all. The Mannlicher loaded it up as the 9.5x56mm Mannlicher for there Model 1910 Schoenaouer.
