Aquilla WMA?????
« on: October 09, 2005, 11:20:10 AM »
Recently moved to the Hillsboro area and am looking at Aquilla WMA for deer, hogs, and small game.  I spent friday snooping around the perimeter just for orientation.  I have a lot of hunting experience but NO experience in this area (aquilla).  I have a lot of questions.  If anyone would like to give input on any of them or share your experiences, I would appreciate it.  Soo, here goes the questions.  What areas would be good to start scouting?  Opinions on rifled slug gun(100yrd accurate) vs Knight muzzle loader(200yrd accurate) but daily cleanings.  Are most of the areas thick enough not to justify the muzzle loader?  I have heard the place is crawling with hunters come gun season.  Where will most of the crowds go?  I am willing to walk in the dark quite a ways before dawn to avoid the yahoos.  What about climbing tree stands?  Enough straight limbless trees around to justify toating the 40lbs around on my back.  What about time of the rut?  I understand this is a lot of questions and most would be answered after a few days scouting.  I just am limited in how often I can scout before season and would really appreciate any info to get me started.  Thanks in advance to all that reply in help of the new guy!

Duke:  That area is pretty busy in the fall.  I haven't hunted it in several years, but remember well how crowded it can get.  If I lived closer, say, Hillsboro (oops!) I'd probably be a regular out there.  I used to hang out in the northwest corner close to the highway between H'boro and Lake Whitney.   Never saw any sign of hogs, but ya never know.  Deer are indeed to be had, but it will take some work.  Lots of guys use the area for duck, squirrel, etc., and also to fish the upper creek area (which was loaded with tree rats).  I used a slug gun--read the requirements of the public hunting area guide CLOSELY before going out with a muzzleloader.  Same for tree stands.  Not sure you can legally place anything out.

Hope this doesn't discourage you.  It really is a nice place.

DennisB,

Thanks for the reply!!  I was really wondering if anyone had ever hunted there.  I think I will avoid the place opening weekend.  My days off are typically during the week, so I may be safe out there.  I also called the wma manager to ask questions as well.  I want to make sure I am "complying" with all regs out there.

Thanks,
Duke
