Model 7 vs Model 700 - interchangeability
« on: October 10, 2005, 06:43:05 AM »
It's my understanding that the Rem 7 is based on the Rem 700.  Since the 700 has a short action version, though, what makes the model 7 different?  And ultimately, I was wondering what parts would be interchangeable between the two.  Saw a model 7 I liked but would want to modify it with certain 700 accessories.

Older Model 7s are not interchangeable at all witht he 700s. Their receivers used a three hole scope mount.

I believe the ONLY interchangable part is the trigger assembly. The safety might also tho, not sure.

Question then, what reasons would a person have to buy a Model 7 over a Model 700 short action?  Ie why does Remington make the Model 7 and not consolidate with the M 700 short action?  All I can think of are specific model details, like specific stocks and barrel lengths.  Nothing that would warrant major uninterchangeability.

Possibly answered my own question.  Took a look at pics on Remington's website and the Model Seven clearly has a shorter rear receiver bridge.  I'm assuming that means the M7 takes scopes less seriously than reducing forward weight?  I can see now what all may be different with the 700, but wonder what still is the same, ie bolt cross section and barrel threading.

I don't know if the threading on the barrel is the same or not but have a new Krieger 24 inch barrel  that I will have installed soon. It will be chambered the same as the original barrel in 7mm-08. I have it and a 700 in front of me now and it looks like a more compact 700 and feels about 2 pounds lighter. The action appears to be somewhat shorter but I don't have anyway measuring it. Sweet little rifle it is. Just don't like short barrels.

The model 7 is actually based on the old XP-100 pistol action, not the model 700 action.

That's good to know!  Is the XP-100 particularly different from the 700 then?

Mostly it's just a little smaller! That's why the parts don't interchange. I believe the new XR-100 rifle uses the same action, in the pistol's original solid bottom (single shot) design.

That action was also used in the models 600 and 660. The model 7 is an update of that action to solve the complaints of the customers.
