30-06 or .308?
« on: October 10, 2005, 07:12:22 AM »
I'm wanting to buy a new rifle for deer season this year. I dont know if it will be a remington700, browning a-bolt 2, or ruger m77. Which of these rifles are the most dependable and durable and which caliber would fit these rifles best?(.30-06 or .308) I'll be hunting with shots no further than 150 yards. Thanks.

I'd go for the Browning a-bolt...and either caliber will work well.I don't like the Rugers stock design...nor the feel of the standard Remington 700...although those are cheaper than the Browning.

What are you hunting? For deer a 308 is good or a 7mm08, 260 and 243. For varmint a 223 or 204. For elk one of the wsms would do.

I got my first Browning, in a stainless stalker, 7m-08.  I really like it although I did swap out the trigger spring with a 3 pound Timney.  I have never really been a fan of the newer Remingtons and dont like the looks of the Rugers.  Many people would disagree with me and thats fine.  Both the 308 and 30-06 are great deer calibers . . . I have had both and to tell you the truth my heart goes out to the 06.  Don't know why as it will not do any better on deer than the 308.  But concerning your question I cannot tell you.  You should try to handle them all and see what feels best to you.  All of them should last a lifetime.
