squirrel hunting
« on: October 10, 2005, 10:38:10 AM »
Me and my hunting buddies got together this morning and went out for a good ole squirrel hunt.  It was damp and cool this morning.  So the leaves on the ground wasn't like walking on corn flakes like it has been here lately.  We were hunting the Frederick water shed area.  Lots of oak and hickory tree up on a high ridge.  We all spit up went our own way.  I hunted close to the edge of a open field.  Got my first squirrel before I was ten feet into the wood line.  I hunted the wood line for about three hours and manage to bag four nice brushy tails.  We all met up for lunch down at a local country inn.  Ended up between the four of us we got 12 squirrels.  We are gonna get back together and make a big pot of squirrel stew next weekend.

Very nice hunt.

Sounds like you had a good time and got few on top of that. I am going to go out and try to shoot a few more this week. Enjoy that stew next weekend.

Ok guys I had to ask my Mom's permission to release this recipe to you so feel lucky she said it was ok.

Its best if you use a slow cooker (But a big pot on top of the stove will work too)

2 squirrels, cut up
1 cup flour
salt and pepper to taste
2 1/2    tablespoons butter
7 cups boiling water
1 teaspoon thyme
1 cup corn
3 potatoes, cubed
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
3 medium onions, sliced
2 cups canned tomatoes with juice or fresh cut up (besure to save the juice)

Roll the squirrel pieces in flour, salt, and pepper.
Brown in butter.
Add squirrel and all other ingredients, (with the exception of the tomatoes), to the boiling water, cover, and simmer for an hour.
Add the tomatoes and continue to simmer another hour.
And you have to have some drop biscuts with this.
Man we are talking some damn good eating here.

Man the stew turned out VERY good !!!!!  We all met over at my place on Sunday.  Had alot of good eats to start things off.  Had alot of cold beer and then I brought out the squirrel stew.  Man it was a hit right away !!!!!
This stew is awsome !!!!!  Even my GF that has ever tasted squirrel loved it.  Just too bad the Washington Redskins didn't win the game.

Dave,
You're making my stomach growl! It looks like squirrel hunting is going to be on the agenda next time I go to the woods. My mom has a similar recipe for those tree rats! Plus, I need to see how my new 410 shoots. Bought it in Jan. and still haven't fired it!
