« on: October 10, 2005, 12:40:18 PM »
Was wanting to try a few float sets for rats this year but was wondering if they would be at risk of catching turtles or ducks
total for this year so far
3 grinners
2 coyotes
4 coons and
1 skunk

 so far

I've never caught a turtle or duck on a muskrat float.  Got quite a few bonus mink on them though! Ace

I have caught turtles on them but not during the regular fur season...only when doing summer ADC work.  I have caught great blue herons on them (which are easily released) and I think if you are in a ducky area you run the risk of catching them....if you are trapping where others will see you may want to make modifications to your floats like running a piece of weldwire over the top and throwing some dead grass on it...this leaves a tunnel of sorts and will still catch rats but not the others.

I have never had a problem, with unwanted catches in my rat floats.Though I have taken several beavers in them.
Tims input on the screen covering is a good one.
Ditches, farm ponds and bog lakes, are where I have had the best luck with floats.I never try to compete with natural resting spots.
