375 H&H Recommendations?
« on: October 10, 2005, 02:43:51 PM »
Well fellas, I decided that I want to start using a .375 for Elk hunting next year.  I'm left handed, and I want a great rifle with a rep for accuracy.  I like to "style" of a Ruger #1, but franky, I'm a pistol guy and don't research rifles very often.  Can anyone get me started on my quest?

I wanted a good .375 and didn't want to spend more than $1000. I found a used Remington Custom Shop Safari KS rifle with synthetic stock. It's pretty darned nice. Feeding and all mechanics are smooth as silk.  The stock is by McMillan. The iron sights are OK, but not great. Mine is very consistent and holds its zero perfectly regardless of humidity or temperature. Some will say it's a piece of junk because it's not control round feed, but this particular gun can be reloaded while upside down, running, shaking, and otherwise in odd positions.

Because you're a lefty, you may want to take a look at these. They come in left-handed action.

It's a 9 pound rifle without a scope or ammo. Recoil is not bad at all. I like the barrel mounted sling swivel ring.

If you like the Ruger No.1, I'd say go for it.  They are great rifles.

Winchester makes a lefty M70 in 375 H&H from time to time.  They sell out really quick when they are available.

My vote would go to the Ruger #1 if you like them.  :D

Do you find the Ruger #1's as accurate as you'd expect from a good bolt gun? I was just wondering because I'm considering one in the .375 H&H.

I don't have the 375H&H, but I have the 45-70 and it is a tack driver. I have extremely good accurate with it. At 100 Yards a 1 inch group is very doable. I am using the 350 gr. Barnes X bullets intended for the 458 Win Mag in mine.  :D

If money was no option then you could check out this, http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976644780.htm or if you prefer a lower cost M70 left hand then check out http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976611140.htm.  The last one should be what you're looking for unless you really want a Ruger No. 1 then go to http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976550196.htm for an unfired one.  Lawdog

Thank you everyone for the suggestions.  I still haven't decided yet.  I have read the Ruger #1 has a reputation for not being as accurate as it looks.  I am going to take my time and keep looking.

bambam,

Yes some #1's can give you fits looking for accuracy. The biggest problem with #1's is the way they recoil. Any # 1 over a .300 Win Mag kicks like a mule.

The .375 Wby was re-introduced by Weatherby and an Accumark would make a fine Elk rifle.

Thanks.  I had overlooked the Weatherbies because I always associated Weatherby with Monte Carlo stocks - which I cannot stand at all.  Anyway, I'll check and see if the stock on the Accumark might work for me.
