Load for 308 '93 Mauser and cast 180 LEE?
« on: October 10, 2005, 02:57:18 PM »
I have a LEE C309-180-R mould, and several hundred bullets cast up. I also have a 1916 (93) Spanish Mauser with .308 barrel. Does anyone here a mild pressure load that's equivalent to the original 7mm chambering they'd like to share? I have the following IMR powders to work with: 3031, 4064, 4198. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Ji

Ganjiro,

I had a spanish 1916 that I shot thousands of cast bullets through. I loaded a rcbs 180FN in front of 15.0 gr of IMR4198. I can't find my chronoraph records but it was somewhere around 1700 fps or so, and was a good mild loading, and it killed many, many a jackrabbit.

I belive that the lyman cast bullet manual has a similar load. I never did mess too much with the other powders, 4895 a little, but I'll have to dig through my records to find charge weights, velocities and such.

I only have one light load for the .308 with the Lee bullet with a gas check.  11.4 gr of Unique with a tuft of kapok for filler tamped down.  8 shots in under 2 3/4 in. at 50yds with my '95 Chileian nato conversion.  Good by my eyes.  My 150gr. jacketed load for this rifle is 35.5 gr of 4895 for about 2000fps and 1 1/8in. group at 50 yards. 16+ grains of 2400 works well with all my cast bullets in milsurps.
